MUSKEGON, Mich. (March 10, 2010) - Mike Zbriger scored twice and Joel Gasper's goal at 3:46 of the third period stood up as the game winner as the Quad City Mallards, proud International Hockey League (IHL) affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers, defeated the host Muskegon Lumberjacks 4-3 Wednesday night.
Gasper's wraparound goal gave Quad City a 4-2 third period lead and loomed all the larger after Muskegon's Michel Beausoleil cut the margin to 4-3 with a drive from the high slot at 9:10 of the third period.
The Mallards spent most of the evening operating from in front, coming out of the first period with a 2-1 advantage. The margin widened to a pair when Zbriger buried Patrick Levesque's (one goal, two assists) cross-crease pass for Zbriger's second goal of the game at 13:46 of the second period.
Matt Krug's power play blast from the left wing circle would pull Muskegon right back within one just over two minutes later.
The Mallards first grabbed the lead at 5:34 of the first period while on the power play when Levesque tipped in Jacques Perreault's (three assists) shot.
Zbriger scored from the doorstep at 11:39 of the first to stretch the gap to two goals.
The Lumberjacks got on the scoreboard for the first time while up two men when Robin Bouchard swept the puck in from point blank range at 14:42 of the opening frame.
The Mallards return home to take on the Lumberjacks Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. 1,000 Mike Zbriger bobbleheads will be given away to fans attending that game.
