Quad City Mallards News Release
MOLINE, Ill. - Mickey Lang's fortieth goal of the season proved to be the game winner as the host Quad City Mallards defeated the Bloomington Blaze 6-3 Friday night in front of 7,531 fans. With the win- the Mallards' third in a row overall and seventh straight on home ice- Quad City improved to 32-26-6 to reach 70 points on the season and keep hold of sixth place in the Central Hockey League standings.
Lang's milestone goal was one for three scored by the Mallards as they took control in the second period. Jason Kostadine's blast from the top of the right wing circle widened what had been a 2-1 Mallard lead to 3-1 just 1:34 into the second. At 8:19, Lang's wrist shot from the slot stretched the gap to 4-1 and chased Bloomington starting goaltender Ross MacKinnon from the game. Just 19 seconds later, Shane Toporowski beat relief netminder Pier-Olivier Pelletier with a one timer to expand the Mallard advantage to 5-1.
The Blaze would finally reply to the Mallards' second period onslaught when Jared Walker tipped in a power play goal at 10:21 of the second. The Blaze cut the gap to 5-3 with Matt Larke's rebound goal just 56 seconds into the third period, but Matt Boyd- who also picked up two assists- would kill off any Bloomington comeback hopes by pouncing on a rebound with exactly five minutes left in the contest.
The Mallards started the night just well as they finished it. It was Quad City's Patrick Levesque who walked down the slot to open the scoring at 3:39 of the first period. That lead lasted less than four minutes before Bloomington's Nicholas Rioux scored the equalizer in a goalmouth scramble at 7:13 of the first. Quad City was on the power play when Darren McMillan swept home Levesque's cross-crease pass to put the Mallards on top for good at 14:27.
The Mallards visit Bloomington tomorrow night before closing out the regular season Sunday at 4:05 p.m. against the Blaze. Sunday is Fan Appreciation Day, with the fun to start even before the Mallards' game gets underway- the fifth annual Quad Cities firefighters' benefit game will face off at noon Sunday at the i wireless Center. Quad Cities and Chicago firefighters will take to the ice to raise funds for Addi's Faith Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to ending childhood cancer. Lower bowl tickets good for both the firefighters' game and the Mallards' match-up with Bloomington are available for just $14 and can be purchased at the i wireless Center Sunday.
A 42" LCD flat screen television will be raffled off during the Mallards' game against the Blaze to benefit Addi's Faith Foundation. That drawing is just one of a series of giveaways set for Sunday. Sunday will also see one lucky fan attending that game win a new refrigerator courtesy of American Furniture Electronics Appliances. The first 1,000 fans ages 13 and over through the doors for the Mallards' game will all receive free Mallards jerseys.
Sunday is also the season's final Family Skate Day presented by Genesis Health System. Fans can bring their skates to the game and join the Mallards on the ice immediately after the end of that contest. A post-game event at Del's in the District will give fans a further opportunity to spend time with the Mallards. Mallards players will head to Del's- which is located at 1829 2nd Avenue in Rock Island- immediately after leaving the ice Sunday.
Tickets for Sunday's game can be purchased in person at the i wireless Center ticket office, at Ticketmaster outlets, through www.ticketmaster.com or through Ticketmaster charge-by-phone toll free at 1-800-745-3000. The ticket office is open weekdays from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and on game days from 10:00 a.m. until the start of the second period.
First round playoff tickets are also now on sale. All first round playoff seats will be available for just $12 for adults and $9 for youth 12 and under. In addition, adult opening round tickets for fans who wear green to playoff games as part of the Mallards' "Green Out", will be available for just $10 at the i wireless Center ticket office.
