Mallards Come From Behind, Fall In Fort Wayne

Fort Wayne, Ind. (January 17, 2010) - Colin Chaulk, who had two goals and two assists on the afternoon, broke a 3-3 tie with just under a minute remaining in the third period and then iced the game with a empty net goal with just over one second left as the host Fort Wayne Komets overcame a rally by the Quad City Mallards, proud International Hockey League (IHL) affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers, to defeat the Mallards 5-3 Sunday.

Chaulk tipped in the game winner with 52 seconds left in the third period, stopping Quad City short after the Mallards' Juris Stals had buried a rebound to even the score at three with just over four minutes left in the third.

Stals's goal capped off a Mallard comeback from a two goal deficit. After P.C. Drouin's (two goals) blue line blast made it 3-1 with Fort Wayne on the power play at 5:47 of the second period, the Mallards drew back within one with a power play goal of their own when Justin White rifled the puck past Fort Wayne goaltender Tim Haun from the right wing circle at 11:13 of the second.

The Komets had earlier scored twice in 13 first period seconds to suddenly turn a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 lead. After Kyryll Katrych drove the puck into the gaping Komet net with Haun out of position at 2:45 of the first, the Komets bounced back with rapid fire goals from Konstantin Shafronov and Drouin. Shafronov equalized by burying Colin Chaulk's goalmouth feed at 5:33 of the opening period. At 5:46 Drouin broke the tie by firing home Leo Thomas's centering pass.

The Mallards, who will visit the Bloomington Prairie Thunder on Tuesday night, will next take to the ice at home on Wednesday, January 27 against Flint at 7:05 p.m. Fans attending the January 27 game will be able to enjoy $2 12-ounce drafts available at i wireless Center concession stands throughout that contest.
