Port Huron Icehawks News Release

PORT HURON, MI - The Port Huron Icehawks mounted a third period comeback after trailing by five on Sunday, but the effort fell short and they were defeated 8-4 by the Muskegon Lumberjacks in a wild game at McMorran Arena.

The loss snaps an 11 game home winning streak for Port Huron and marks their first defeat on home ice since November 11th versus the same Lumberjacks. The Lumberjacks improve to 26-9-0-3 with the win and move into sole possession of first place in the International Hockey League. The Icehawks fall to second place with a near identical record of 25-9-0-3, though they have one game in hand on their rival.

Matt Robertson tallied a hat trick and Michel Beausoleil recorded two goals and an assist to lead the Lumberjacks, while Brandon Naurato had a pair of goals for Port Huron.

After falling behind 5-0 after the first two periods, the Icehawks rallied in the third, outshooting their opponent 19-8 and and scoring four unanswered goals in the first 11 minutes of the frame. The comeback began with a goal by Naurato at 3:42 on an assist from Tab Lardner and continued when Daniel Tetrault scored just over a minute later. Kerry Bowman and Jamie Lovell assisted on the Tetrault goal.

The Icehawks kept the momentum going with another goal from Naurato at 9:33 on assists from Pete Rouleau and Mickael Bedard. Bowman slashed the deficit to one with a goal of his own at 10:51. Tetrault assisted on the play. The Lumberjacks were not finished, however, and scored three more times to cut the rally attempt short. The goals included one from Todd Robinson, Robertson's third of the night and Beausoleil's second power play goal of the game.

Shots were tied 20-20 through the first two periods of play, but only Muskegon found the back of the net, scoring five uninterrupted goals to take a 5-0 lead after the first forty minutes. Matt Krug and Robertson both beat goalie Adam Russo in the first period to give their team the early advantage. The Lumberjacks outshot the Icehawks 11-10 in the first.

The Lumberjacks onslaught continued in the second period with Robertson's second of the night at 6:54, an even strength goal by Brian Bicek at 14:38 and a power play goal off the stick of Beausoleil at 17:07.

Icehawks goaltender Russo made 15 saves on 20 shots through the first two periods, while Larry Sterling relieved him in the third and made five saves on eight shots. Sebastien Centomo turned away 35 of 39 shots for the Lumberjacks. The Icehawks were held scoreless in four power play attempts and the Lumberjacks were 2-4 on the power play.
