MOLINE, Ill.anuary 4, 2011) - The Quad City Mallards of the "AA" Central Hockey League today announced in conjunction with the CHL that the Mallards' David Brown has been named the Oakley CHL Goaltender of the Week for the period ending Sunday, January 2.
Brown, 25, last week went 3-1-0 in four games while turning in a 1.74 goals against average and a .952 save percentage and posting the first two shutouts of his career.
Brown got his week off to a superb start by making 36 saves in the Mallards' 4-0 home ice whitewashing of the Bloomington PrairieThunder last Monday. Two nights later, the Stoney Creek, Ontario, native stopped 22 shots as the Mallards fell to the Wichita Thunder at home 2-0. Brown and the Flock bounced back to kick off a three-game road weekend last Friday evening with a 6-5 overtime win over the Fort Wayne Komets during which the fourth year netminder made 39 saves. Sunday afternoon saw Brown silence the PrairieThunder again, this time by making a personal single game season high 43 saves in a 2-0 victory in Bloomington. In all, Brown stopped 140 of the 147 shots he faced over the course of his four starts last week.
On the season, Brown, who has gone 8-9-0 in 19 games, is tied for fourth in the CHL in save percentage (.920) and ranks eighth in the league in goals against average (2.69).
Brown joined the Mallards this season after tending goal for the ECHL's Gwinnett Gladiators last year. He went 10-19-3 in 33 games with the Gladiators while posting a 3.94 goals against average and a .888 save percentage.
Brown was originally selected by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the eighth round of the 2004 National Hockey League Entry Draft with the two hundred twenty-eighth overall pick and spent his first two seasons in the Penguins' organization.
Brown split his first two pro campaigns between the Wheeling Nailers of the ECHL and the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League. As a rookie in 2007-08, Brown went 9-7-1 in 19 AHL games while turning in a 2.34 goals against average and a .913 save percentage. That campaign also saw him go 6-6-1 in 13 games in the ECHL with a 3.31 goals against average and a .913 save percentage. The following year Brown went 1-2-0 in four games with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and 14-6-2 with a 3.06 goals against average and a .907 save percentage with Wheeling.
Before turning pro Brown enjoyed a standout four year collegiate career at Notre Dame. As a freshman in 2003-04, he was named Notre Dame's Rookie of the Year after backstopping the Fighting Irish to the first NCAA tournament berth in school history. Brown's senior year likewise proved historic as he was named a Hobey Baker Award finalist while helping the Golden Domers to the first Central Collegiate Hockey Association regular season and playoff titles in the program's history and another NCAA tournament appearance. Brown set a host of school records in 2006-07, going 30-6-3 in 39 games with a 1.58 goals against average, a .931 save percentage and six shutouts. He led the nation in wins and goals against average and finished second in shutouts and save percentage on the way to earning First Team All-American West honors, being named CCHA Player of the Year and making the All-CCHA First Team. In 111 career games in the gold and blue Brown went 55-38-11 with a 2.32 goals against average, a .916 save percentage and 12 shutouts.
