Erie BayHawks News Release
ERIE, PA - Erie BayHawks General Manager Malik Rose has been named the NBA G League's Basketball Executive of the Year, the league announced today. Rose was selected by his fellow NBA G League basketball executives.
"Malik has done an incredible job of bringing the excitement of BayHawks basketball back to Erie," said Team President Matt Bresee. "He started this season with a blank slate and has built this team from scratch into one of the most successful teams in franchise history."
Rose presided over an Erie BayHawks team that won the Southeast Division, the franchise's first-ever division title, in addition to securing a spot in the 2018 NBA G League Playoffs as the third seed in the Eastern Conference. This is the BayHawks' first postseason appearance since the 2011-12 season and fourth appearance in team history. Erie finished the regular season with a 28-22 (.560) record, including a 10-2 (.833) mark against teams in the Southeast Division. The team's 28 regular season wins are tied for the second-most wins in a single season in BayHawks history.
Named General Manager of the Erie BayHawks on April 11, 2017, Rose hired former New York Knicks assistant coach Josh Longstaff on July 25, 2017. Longstaff was named NBA G League Coach of the Month for the month of January. The BayHawks compiled an 8-3 (.727) record that month, which included a 6-1 (.857) clip against opponents with winning records.
During the 2017-18 regular season, Rose's BayHawks ranked second in blocks per game (6.4) and fifth in assists per game (23.9). Erie swiped 9.7 steals per game, which was good for seventh-best in the NBA G League. Individually, Atlanta Hawks two-way guard Josh Magette led the NBA G League in assists per game (10.2), while averaging 15.1 points per contest. It marked the third consecutive season Magette led the league in assists. Raphiael Putney finished second in blocks per game (2.3), while Jeremy Evans finished third in field goal percentage (.618) and fifth in rebounds per game (9.9).
Under Rose's leadership, Tyler Cavanaugh and Jaylen Morris signed multi-year contracts with the Atlanta Hawks. Both Cavanaugh (Atlanta Hawks affiliate player) and Morris (NBA G League Draft selection) began the season in Erie with the BayHawks. Two-way players Josh Magette and Andrew White III have seen playing time with the Hawks as well.
