Majors Win in Shootout

December 18, 2011 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release

Thanks to Jamie Wise the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors will have themselves a very Merry Christmas.

Wise scored the lone goal for the Majors in regulation and then fired the shootout winner as Mississauga edged the Sudbury Wolves 2-1 in Ontario Hockey League play Sunday at the Hershey Centre.

JP Anderson made 24 saves in regulation time and stopped all three Sudbury shots in the shootout as the Majors head into the Christmas break on a two-game win streak by taking their second win of the weekend after beating Kingston 3-1 on Friday night.

"It's a great way to go into the break," General Manager/Coach James Boyd said after Mississauga moved into a three-way tie for sixth place in the Eastern Conference standings with the win, along with Sudbury and Peterborough.

"It was a tight battle all afternoon and Jamie came up big twice to give us the victory. Now the guys can enjoy a good week off with their families, get rested and recharged and ready for the second half of the season.

The Majors finish the first half at 16-14-1-3, leaving them right in the mix in the battle for East playoff positions.

"In a year after a Memorial Cup year, you have to be happy with where we are," Boyd added. "We've worked hard most games and hard work paid off for us today."

After a scoreless first period Michael Sgarbossa opened the scoring for the Wolves at 1:54 of the second period, beating Anderson with a great individual effort to open the scoring.

Wise then tied the game with a great individual effort of his own, coming out of the penalty box and scoring on a high backhand off a breakaway on Sudbury goalie Joel Vienneau to tie the game.

That was it for the scoring all afternoon and in the shootout, Wise was the only player to score to send the Majors fans home happy.

Mississauga out-shot Sudbury 27-25, with the Majors 0-for-8 on the power play and the Wolves 0-for-3.

The Majors wish all their fans and supporters the very best this holiday season and send hopes for a great 2012 to all of you! Next game for Mississauga is Wednesday, Dec. 28 at Guelph, with the Majors returning home to host the Niagara Ice Dogs Friday, Dec. 30 at 7:30 p.m. at the Hershey Centre.

Tickets for all home games are available at www.ticketmaster.ca or at the Hershey Centre box office during regular business hours.
