Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release
One way or another the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors just keep on finding ways to win hockey games.
Dylan DeMelo scored the only goal in the shootout and Sergey Kuptsov had the lone goal in regulation as Mississauga improved to 5-0 to start the season with a 2-1 win over the Kingston Frontenacs in Ontario Hockey League play Sunday at the Hershey Centre.
JP Anderson stopped 31 shots in regulation and all three shots he faced in the shootout after DeMelo scored on the Majors first attempt, making Mississauga the first in the OHL to get to five wins this season.
Kuptsov's power play goal at 17:56 of the first period was his first OHL goal and that tally held up until Tyler J. Brown banked a shot off a crowd of players in front of Anderson to tie the game with just 25 second left while goalie Igor Bobkov was on the bench for an extra attacker.
After a scoreless overtime period DeMelo was the hero after beating Bobkov through the five-hole as Mississauga's early season magic continued.
"A win is a win is a win, that's what we keep telling the players," Majors General Manager/Coach James Boyd said. "We're treating every game like it's a must-win game because we know that we'll have some struggles at some point in the season.
"It's so important to bank the points at this time of year because it can make such a difference at the end."
Anderson was the major difference on Sunday, coming up big when he had to.
"JP was fantastic all afternoon and he was great Friday too," Boyd said. "He's a real leader on our team and when he's playing great, he just fills everyone with confidence.
"We played really well defensively in front of him but his poise makes us confident out there. It's a great way to start the season and it's great to see him playing so well."
Anderson needed to be especially sharp through the end of the second period and much of the third, as an already depleted Majors lineup needed to kill off a five minute major penalty followed by four consecutive minors.
The Frontenacs went 0-for-6 on the power play while the Majors were 1-for-4 with the man advantage. Final shots were 32-26 in favour of the Frontenacs.
The Majors next home game is Friday, October 7th when they host the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds at 7:30 p.m. at the Hershey Centre. Tickets are available at www.ticketmaster.ca, or by visiting the Hershey Centre box office.
