Majors Score Late To Open 2010 With A Win

January 3, 2010 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release

Mississauga, ON- The Mississauga St. Micahel's Majors opened 2010 with a victory over the Ottawa 67's, 5-4 this afternoon at the Hershey Centre. The win moves the Majors to 26-8-3-1 on the season. Jordan Mayer's winning goal with under four minutes remaining in the third looked a lot similar to the one Blake Parlett scored only four days ago in over time that beat Brampton.

The game was back-and-forth from the opening whistle, which is quite the contrast from the previous two games between the clubs. Ottawa opened the scoring just past the midway point of the first period courtesy of Cody Lindsay. The play began with 67's forward Tyler Toffoli stealing the puck from the Majors defence and sending a cross ice pass to Lindsay, who put it short side of JP Anderson. Kelly Geoffrey responded for the Majors in the closing seconds of the first to tie the game 1-1. Rob Flick blocked a 67's clearing attempt and the puck went onto Geoffrey's stick for the tap-in.

The Majors kept the momentum into the second period and took the lead four minutes in when Riley Brace made it 2-1. Brace had an easy tap-in after Ottawa netminder Petr Mrazek made the save off Brett Flemming's shot. The puck trickled past Mrazek and Brace was there to put it away. The Majors kept up the pressure and did not allow an Ottawa shot for the first 11 minutes of the period. The teams exchanged power play goals to close the period courtesy of Tyler Toffoli for Ottawa and Casey Cizikas for Mississauga. The Majors had a 3-2 lead after forty minutes.

Nineteen seconds into the third period, T.J. Battani put the Majors ahead by two; but the lead wouldn't last. Anthony Nigro and Dalton Smith scored just two minutes apart to tie the game with six minutes left in regulation. That's when history repeated itself. Thomas Nesbitt was charged with slashing with just under four minutes left sending the Majors on the power play. Flemming and Cameron Gaunce exchanged passes, and Gaunce fired a shot missing the net, the rebound kicked off the boards and onto the stick of Jordan Mayer who backhanded it home, making it 5-4 for the Majors and that's how it would end.

JP Anderson made 21 saves for Mississauga and collects his thirteenth win of the season. Petr Mrazek made 24 saves and takes the loss for Ottawa. Casey Cizikas received "First Star" honours with his goal and assist. Brett Flemming added two assists and was the "Second Star." Tyler Toffoli of Ottawa rounded out the top three.

The Majors will now hit the road for five straight road games. This coming week they will be in Peterborough to play the Petes on Thursday night. Saturday the Majors will play in Barrie against the OHL's hottest team, the Colts, and Sunday the Majors will head to Brampton to meet the Battalion.

Tomorrow is the final day to purchase a Majors Holiday Pack. For more information please contact the Majors office at (905) 502-7788 x.252.
