Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release
Toronto, Ont. (Sunday, Feb. 11, 2007) - The St. Michael's Majors offence was clicking on all cylinders this afternoon, despite the fact that their leading scorer, Matt Caria, was forced to leave the game with an injury only forty seconds into the affair. That didn't faze the Majors as they rang off four 1st period goals and produced a 6-3 win.
The Majors got their early 3-0 lead on goals by Jason Cassidy, Cassidy Preston and Tim Billingsley (first of his career) at 5:28, 9:56 and 14:03 (power-play) of the 1st period. The assists were credited to Byron Elliott, Anthony Tapper, Jesse Messier and Michael Pelech. The Petes responded with a Justin Caruana tally, off of Pat Daley and Brendan Taylor feeds, at 14:19. However, the Majors retained their three-goal lead at 18:34 when Rob Kwiet ripped home a power-play shot after receiving Matt McCready and Kaspars Daugavins passes.
The trend continued in the middle frame as Cassidy added his second and third goals of the day, at 10:11 (power-play) and 15:40, to give the Majors a 6-1 lead. The assists on these goals went to Billingsley, Kwiet, Tyler Allen and goaltender Chris Carrozzi. However, the Petes cut the lead to four when Brett Theberge scored at 16:46 off of Zach Harnden and Yves Bastien passes.
Bastien got the Petes to within three goals with his power-play tally at 15:22 of the 3rd period, off of Harnden and John Armstrong passes. However, that's as close as they could get.
Chris Carrozzi finished the day with 35 saves for the Majors while Trevor Cann supplied 32 for the Petes. The Majors were 3 for 5 on the power-play while the Petes were 1 for 9. The game's three stars were Cassidy (1st), Billingsley (2nd) and Bastien (3rd).
The Majors spend the next two games on the road as they visit Belleville on Wednesday evening for a 7:15 p.m. puck drop, then Windsor on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. They return home to host the Central Division-leading Barrie Colts next Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.
Majors tickets are available by contacting the club at 416-651-8228, by calling Ticketmaster at 416-872-5000, online at www.ticketmaster.ca or by stopping by the St. Michael's College School Arena box office within two hours of the puck drop.
