Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release

Mississauga, ON - The Mississauga St. Michael's Majors completed the weekend sweep and recorded their fourth consecutive victory with a 4-0 win over the Sudbury Wolves this afternoon at the Hershey Centre. The Majors can now clinch first place in the Eastern Conference with a win on Thursday against Peterborough or a Niagara loss on Thursday.

The Majors continued their recent trend of starting strong when Justin Shugg scored. Shugg carried the puck into the offensive zone and started a great passing play, which ended with Gregg Sutch passing the puck across the crease, and Shugg finished what he started, tapping it in for the goal at 4:42. Just over a minute later, the Majors struck again. Joe Cramarossa was trying to get a shot off just in front of the net when he lost the puck. However, the puck found its way onto Corey Bureau's stick and Bureau deposited it into the back of the net, making it 2-0 Majors. Justin Shugg was the next Major to score with a great individual effort. Shugg got the puck down in the corner in the Wolves zone and fought off a couple of defenders. Valiquette dove for the puck as Shugg was skating across the crease, leaving a wide open net for Shugg to chip into. Shugg's second goal of the game made it 3-0 Majors. The fourth goal of the period would result in a goalie change for Sudbury. The play started when Riley Brace took a shot from just inside the blue line. Smith-Pelly was there to try and jam home the rebound but Valiquette was up to the challenge. However, a Sudbury defender tripped up Valiquette, leaving Brace alone in front of the net with the puck. Brace put the puck in to make it 4-0 Majors, and end Valiquette's day. Jacob Riley came on in relief for Sudbury. The Majors outshot Sudbury in the first period, 9-8.

About eight minutes into the second period, the Majors had a spectacular scoring opportunity. Brett Flemming executed a solid pass to Jordan Mayer, leaving Mayer with a breakaway. Mayer could not convert as Riley made the stop and kept the deficit at four. Immediately following the Mayer breakaway, Sudbury had a good scoring chance of their own when Marcus Foligno found some space and put a good shot on Anderson but Anderson made the stop to keep the shutout in tact. By the end of the second period, it appeared as though the goalie change was paying off for Sudbury. While the Majors fired 21 shots on Riley, they failed to score. The Wolves had their fair share of chances in the second as well, with 15 shots on JP Anderson but again, they were unable to solve the Majors netminder.

The third period did not have much effect on the final outcome. Each team did have a powerplay opportunity in the third period with Rob Flick taking a cross checking penalty at 12:49 and Josh McFadden took a slashing penalty at 15:09. While both teams had some scoring chances, neither could convert and the Majors successfully swept their weekend schedule with the 4-0 victory. The Majors outshot the Wolves in the third period by a count of 14-6.

Alain Valiquette got the start in net for Sudbury but did not make it out of the first period, allowing four goals on nine shots. Jacob Riley was perfect making 35 saves in relief of Valiquette. JP Anderson made 29 saves on the afternoon for his sixth shutout of the season and was named third star of the game for his efforts. The games other two stars were Flick (2nd) and Shugg (1st).

The Majors hit the road for the next four games. They will play in Peterborough this Thursday, Brampton on Friday and Ottawa on Sunday before travelling to Niagara for their final road game of the regular season against the IceDogs on Thursday, March 17. They then return home to face the Brampton Battalion on March 18th. Tickets are available at the Hershey Centre box office or by calling 905-502-7788 x. 1.
