Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release

Mississauga, ON - The MasterCard Memorial Cup continued at the Hershey Centre this evening with a crucial game, and a re-match of the Rogers OHL Championship Series, with the Majors taking on the Owen Sound Attack. There was a lot on the line tonight as the winner would earn a berth in the semi final on Friday while the loser would head to the tie breaker. The Majors earned a hard fought victory, defeating the Attack 3-1.

There were a total of 11 penalties in the first period with the Majors receiving the bulk of the powerplay opportunities but they couldn't convert, going 0 for 4. The Attack only had one powerplay and was 0 for 1. The Majors did score the games first goal with the teams skating at even strength at 8:01. In the offensive zone, Jordan Mayer fought off a defender to keep control of the puck and wired a wrist shot past Jordan Binnington to give the Majors a 1-0 lead. Maxim Kitsyn and David Corrente had the assists. The Attack were fortunate to only be down one goal after one, as the Majors had some good chances on the powerplay and outshot Owen Sound 12-3.

Owen Sound bounced back in the second, tying the game. The game tying goal came at the eight minute mark, off the stick of Andrew Shaw. Shaw's goal was assisted by Robby Mignardi and Matt Stanisz. The game started to get rough after that and late in the period, Owen Sound took a couple of penalties that resulted in a two man advantage for the Majors. At 17:52, Shaw took an interference penalty for a hit on Casey Cizikas and while JP Anderson was skating to the bench on the delayed penalty call, Mike Halmo took a goaltender interference penalty. The Majors didn't waste anytime capitalizing as they scored 32 seconds in to the five on three. The goal was scored by Rob Flick, after Brett Flemming got him the puck right in front of the net and Flick beat Binnington to re-claim the one goal Mississauga lead. Michael D'Orazio had the other assist. The second penalty expired with the Majors unable to expand on their lead, and the second period ended with the Majors leading 2-1. Shots on goal in the second period were 11-9 Mississauga.

JP Anderson continued his strong play in the third period, stopping all 10 shots he faced. The Attack pulled Binnington with just over a minute left in the game, but the extra attacker did not work. The Majors had a few chances on the empty net, and eventually, Justin Shugg converted to give the Majors a two goal cushion, securing the victory. Shugg's goal came at 19:25 and was unassisted. Shots on goal were 10-6 in favour of the Majors.

JP Anderson was stellar in the Mississauga net, making 21 saves in the victory. Jordan Binnington made 25 saves in a losing effort. The games three stars were Anderson (3rd), Shaw (2nd) and Flick (1st).

The MasterCard Memorial Cup continues tomorrow with the tie breaker game between Owen Sound and the Kootenay Ice. With the win, the Majors advance to the semi final on Friday night. Tickets for both games are available now at the Hershey Centre box office.
