Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release
Mississauga, ON- The Mississauga St. Michael's Majors handed the Barrie Colts their first loss of the post season after a 5-2 victory tonight at the Hershey Centre. As a result the Majors have tied the Eastern Conference Finals at 1-1.
The Majors power play unit has been the centre of criticism during the playoffs but the special teams unit was a big reason for the victory tonight. Mississauga scored two power play goals and one short-handed goal in the first period to give them a commanding 3-0 lead after one. Barrie fought back in the second but the Majors sealed it in the third. The first Majors goal was scored at 6:26 of the first when Riley Brace scored his third of the post season. The Majors broke out and Blake Parlett sent a cross-ice pass to Brace who put it away giving St. Mike's the 1-0 lead. The Majors received a scare midway through the first when Darren Archibald's stick hit Rob Flick in the face and wedged into his visor. That play handed Archibald a double minor and the Majors were back on the power play. Devante Smith-Pelly put Mississauga ahead 2-0 when he parked himself in front of the Colts goal and tipped in Cameron Gaunce's point shot. Casey Cizikas was called for tripping late in the period, sending Barrie to their first power play of the period. After a blocked shot by the Mississauga defence, Dustin Ekelman jumped on the loose puck and charged towards the Barrie goal on a clear breakaway. The overage forward made a series of moves before beating Mavric Parks through the five-hole to give the Majors a 3-0 lead after one. All three Majors goals in the period were scored by the special teams unit.
The Colts began the second period as a determined bunch and generated numerous chances for themselves while limiting Mississauga to one shot in the first ten minutes. At 10:13 of the second period T.J. Brodie cut the lead to 3-1. Alex Hutchings initial shot was saved and the rebound went right to Brodie who put it past JP Anderson. Bryan Cameron pulled the Colts to within one after putting a weak backhander on goal. Anderson got his pad on the shot but it took a funny deflection and went into the net to make it 3-2 after two.
Kelly Geoffrey doubled the Majors lead just over three minutes into the third period with his third of the playoffs. After a series of passes by the Majors in-front of the Barrie net, Geoffrey grabbed the loose puck and beat Parks high glove side. Jordan Mayer added a fifth goal for the Majors at 11:18 and that would be the end of the scoring making the final 5-2 for Mississauga.
JP Anderson made 33 saves for the Majors and records his fourth win of the post season. Mavric Parks stopped 22 shots and takes the loss for Barrie. The teams will have no time to reflect on tonight's game as game three goes tomorrow night in Barrie at 7:30 p.m. The series returns to Mississauga on Monday night at 7:00 p.m. for game four. Notes: Mississauga finished the game 2/8 on the power play. Cameron Gaunce collected two assists on the first two Majors goals. With the shorthanded game winner Dustin Ekelman earned the game's "First Star." JP Anderson and Cameron Gaunce rounded out the top three.
