Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release
Oakville, ON - The Mississauga St. Michael's Majors held the third pre-season contest against the Peterborough Petes at Joshua's Creek Arenas in Oakville this afternoon.
After winning the exhibition opener and tying the second game, the Majors were looking to keep things on the upside today - which is exactly what happened. Mississauga battled hard to conclude with a 5-4 win, as their pre-season record shifts to 2-0-1.
Mississauga came off to a flying start as Jordan Mayer connected at 1:05 to give the home team the opening goal of the 1st period. Devanté Smith-Pelly and Alex Cord were the helpers. The Petes knotted things up on a man-advantage with a goal coming from Rickey Buehler at 12:47, while the assists went to Luke Hietkamp and Derek Holden. With only 56 seconds left in the frame Ryan Lopes put the puck into the visitors' net off of passes from Mayer and David Corrente to take a 2-1 lead.
Then, the Majors went ahead 4-1 early in the 2nd period when Mayer (shorthanded) and Smith-Pelly (unassisted) each produced a goal at 0:59 and at 1:57, respectively. On the power-play, the home team connected again to make it 5-1, as Riley Brace got the tally at 7:09 with feeds from Smith-Pelly and Rob Flick. Peterborough's Adam Sedlak and Holden answered back when each connected at 11:43 and at 18:39, respectively, to close the stanza, 5-3. Brett Theberge (2 assists), Matt Puempel and Chris Buonomo provided the passes.
Puempel got the only tally for the Petes in the 3rd period midway through frame at 10:45 with Theberge and Jamie Doornbosch as the helpers on the play, but Mississauga held onto a 5-4 lead to take the victory.
