Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release

It was a much better result in game two of the pre-season for the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors on Labour Day Monday in Peterborough.

Devante Smith-Pelly and Riley Brace both had a goal and an assist as the Majors downed the Peterborough Petes 5-1 to even their pre-season record at 1-1 after losing to the Guelph Storm 6-4 in their exhibition opener Saturday in Guelph.

Rookie goalie Spencer Martin made 35 saves in going all the way in goal and was perfect after the first period to help the Majors overcome being out-shot 36-30.

"It was a better effort from everybody today all round," Mississauga General Manager/Coach James Boyd said. "I thought Spencer showed composure in making difficult saves at different points in the game too.

"The first year players did some nice work on specialty teams especially in killing penalties. You don't worry about wins and losses at this time of year but it was a good effort and a good result nonetheless this early."

Mika Partanen, Stuart Percy and Ryan Duhaime scored the other goals for the Majors. Russian rookie Sergey Kuptsov added a pair of assists for Mississauga, as the Majors led 3-1 after one period and 4-1 after 40 minutes.

Derek Mathers scored the lone goal for the Petes.

The Majors play their first home exhibition game Thursday at 7:30 p.m. when they face the Guelph Storm at Icelands Arena.
