Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release

Mississauga, ON - The semi final of the MasterCard Memorial Cup was played at the Hershey Centre tonight between the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors and the Kootenay Ice. It was the second meeting of the tournament between the two teams and the Majors won once again, with a 3-1 victory, clinching a spot in the Championship game on Sunday.

The first goal came early with the Majors scoring just over a minute into the game. The goal came with Drew Czerwonka in the penalty box for boarding. Devante Smith-Pelly got the game opening goal with the assists going to Stuart Percy and Marc Cantin. The Majors kept up the pressure and looked strong throughout the first, but they could not cushion their lead and the first period ended with the Majors up 1-0. The Majors outshot the Ice 7-5 in the first period.

In the second period Smith-Pelly scored again to expand the Majors lead. Smith-Pelly got the puck down low, skated out in front and fired a wrist shot past Nathan Lieuwen. Just when it looked as though the Majors would go into the third period with a two goal lead, the Ice struck. With seconds remaining in the period Joe Antilla banged home a puck in the Majors crease to cut the Majors lead to one. Shots on goal were 11-10 Majors after the second as the team held a 2-1 lead going into the intermission.

In the third period the Majors played their shut down style and limited Kootenay's chances. Lieuwan was pulled in favour of the extra man late in the frame and the Majors took advantage with Chris DeSousa getting his first goal of the tournament. That was plenty for the Majors as the double blue captured a 3-1 victory and a berth in the Championship game against Saint John on Sunday. Shots on goal were 14-8 Kootenay in the third.

JP Anderson was great once again for the Majors, making 28 saves on 29 shots. Nathan Lieuwan made 23 saves in the loss. The games three stars were Percy (3rd), Anderson (2nd) and Smith-Pelly (1st).

The Majors will now prepare for the Saint John Sea Dogs on Sunday in the Championship game of the 2011 MasterCard Memorial Cup. Game time is 7:00 PM. The game can be seen across the country on Rogers Sportsnet or you can listen live on The Haze FM.ca.
