Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release
Mississauga, ON- Rob Flick recorded the second hat-trick of his career and of the season to power the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors past the Barrie Colts 6-3 this afternoon at the Hershey Centre. The win improves the Majors record to 26-4-0-1 on the season.
The Majors opened up with a quick 2-0 lead and pulled away in the second period to earn the victory. Dylan DeMelo opened the scoring for Mississauga at 3:22 on the power play. Marc Cantin's point shot was stopped by Colts goaltender Clint Windsor but DeMelo rushed in and jumped on the rebound and put it past Windsor to make it 1-0. Just over a minute later Rob Flick put the Majors ahead 2-0 when he beat Windsor with a low driving shot. The Majors managed to hold off a five-on-three from Barrie but the Colts did grab a power play goal in the same series when Steven Beyers shot beat Anthony Peters up high to cut the lead to 2-1. Devante Smith-Pelly restored the two goal advantage for the Majors at 15:50 after he forced Windsor to make the first move and calmly put the puck past the diving netminder to make it 3-1. Barrie again pulled to within a goal of Mississauga when Beyers got past Jordan Mayer and beat Peters on the blocker side to make it 3-2 and that remained the score when the buzzer went.
The Majors came out sluggish to start the second period but picked up momentum as the period progressed. Justin Shugg scored at 12:30 after taking his own rebound around the net and beat Windsor with a quick wrister to make it 4-2. Rob Flick scored his second goal of the game with seven seconds remaining in the period after receiving a gift pass from Brett Flemming at the side of the Colts goal. The Majors held the 5-2 lead after forty minutes.
The Majors had numerous chances in the third period but could not cash in on their opportunities in the early going. Taylor Carnevale scored just under five minutes into the third but that's as close as Barrie would get. Rob Flick completed the hat-trick at 12:53 of the period after jumping on a rebound after David Corrente's shot was saved. Flick fired the puck up high past Windsor to make it 6-3 and the Majors held on to defeat the Colts. Anthony Peters made 21 saves to record the victory for the Majors. Clint Windsor stopped 28 of the 34 shots he faced and takes the loss for Barrie.
The Majors have two games left before the holiday break and both will be in the friendly confines of the Hershey Centre. Next Friday the Majors welcome the Sudbury Wolves at 7:30 p.m. and then the Kingston Frontenacs travel to Mississauga next Sunday for an afternoon start time of 2:00 p.m. 2011 MasterCard Memorial Cup ticket packages are on sale now.
