Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release
TORONTO, ON â The Toronto St. Michael's Majors are pleased to announce that their 2nd Annual Charity Snow Bash will take place at the St. Michael's College School Arena this Sunday, January 18th. The Majors will face off against the Sudbury Wolves, their Central Division rivals, at 2:00 pm that afternoon. All of the day's fundraising proceeds will be donated to KidSportä Ontario (www.kidsport.on.ca), a children's charitable program helping disadvantaged children and youth play organized sport.
There will be a number of interactive zones set up for kids in the St. Michael's College School Arena parking lot, including a ball hockey rink, an accurate shot event, and the Nike Breakaway Challenge. These areas will combine to form the KidSport⢠FunZone, which will open at 12:00 pm. A $5 donation fee will enable participants to partake in the events, with all funds being donated to KidSportä. Besides gaining access to the FunZone, the recipients will also be provided with a goody bag, containing items from the Majors, KidSportä, Ontario's Promise, Coffee Time and Kernels Popcorn. Furthermore, KidSportä will have a number of its Athlete Ambassadors on hand, including Canadian Olympians Johnny Kalbhenn (boxing), Curt Harnett (cycling) and Emilie Livingston (rhythmic gymnastics); and free face painting will be taking place inside the arena.
Through their involvement in the event, Nike will be donating some of the equipment used in the Breakaway Challenge to KidSportä once their nationwide initiative is complete. Also, the Ted Reeve Thunder minor atom hockey team will donate the proceeds from the day's 50/50 draw to KidSportä to help less fortunate children participate in organized sport. To recognize the generosity of this hockey team, each player will be provided with a certificate and gift package from KidSport⢠Ontario, to be presented by the Athlete Ambassadors.
At 1:00 pm that day (Sunday, January 18th), a silent auction will commence in the arena's lounge. It will run until the end of the 2nd intermission and feature a variety of items, including autographs by Ferguson Jenkins, Keith Tkachuk, Steve Sullivan and Chris Osgood as well as a number of former Majors' players that have moved on to the pro ranks.
The game on Sunday will be available on Rogers television in the Toronto region (channel 10). Due to the activities taking place that day, fans are advised to arrive early, as parking will be at a premium.
The Majors visit the Mississauga IceDogs this evening (Wednesday, January 14th - 7:30 pm). They will be back at the St. Michael's College School Arena to host the Windsor Spitfires on Friday, January 16th at 7:30 pm before meeting up with Sudbury on Sunday. Individual tickets for all Majors' home games can be purchased at the St. Michael's College School Arena box office, by calling Ticketmaster at (416) 872-5000 or online at www.ticketmaster.ca. All Majors' games are available via webcast at www.stmichaelsmajors.com.
Notes: The Majors will hold a special on-ice ceremony prior to the game on Sunday afternoon honouring their representatives that recently won medals at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge and 2004 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship. Majors' Owner Eugene Melnyk will be on-hand to present the gifts.
Also, yesterday afternoon, Majors' goaltender Justin Peters was selected to participate in the upcoming 2004 Home Hardware CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game. This contest will take place at London's John Labatt Centre on Wednesday, January 21st and include 40 of the Canadian Hockey League's top draft-eligible players. It will be broadcast nationwide on Rogers Sportsnet.
Finally, Majors' captain Tim Brent has been named to the OHL's Eastern Conference All-Star Team for the current season. The 2004 OHL All-Star Classic will be held at the Peterborough Memorial Centre on Tuesday, January 27th.
