Major League Soccer Disciplinary Committee Announces Suspension and Fines

Published on May 20, 2009 under Major League Soccer (MLS) News Release

NEW YORK (May 20, 2009) - The Major League Soccer Disciplinary Committee today fined New York Red Bulls midfielder Jorge Rojas $750 and suspended him one additional game for an egregious offense and failure to leave the field in a timely and orderly manner after being issued a red card in the Red Bulls game on May 16 versus the Houston Dynamo. The Disciplinary Committee also fined Real Salt Lake defender Ian Joy $500 for inappropriate comments directed at the officiating crew at halftime of Real Salt Lake's game versus the Kansas City Wizards on May 16, 2009.

Rojas was issued a red card for violent conduct in the 34th minute of the match last Saturday night, which carries a one-game suspension and $250 fine. The Disciplinary Committee reviewed the play and concluded that the contact by Rojas to the head of Dynamo midfielder Brian Mullan was egregious and endangered the safety of the opponent and therefore, the Committee suspended Rojas one additional game and fined him an additional $250.

The Disciplinary Committee also fined Rojas $500 for failure to immediately leave the field following the red card, bringing the total fine to $1,000 and the suspension to two games. Rojas will serve the two-game suspension for the Red Bulls games versus the Chicago Fire on May 24 and Colorado Rapids on May 30. Click here to see the incident.

As one of the League's official Charities of Choice, the US Soccer Foundation is the recipient of all player fines at the end of each season. Those fines are added to the Foundation's Annual Grants Pool from which the Board of Directors awards grants to soccer clubs and organizations that serve economically disadvantaged children in urban areas.
