Major League Lacrosse Announces 2019 All-Star Selections
ANNAPOLIS, MD - Major League Lacrosse announced its 2019 All-Star Game player selections on Tuesday. Leading the league was Chesapeake who had ten players named to the game.
Attackmen Steele Stanwick, Colin Heacock and Lyle Thompson, midfielders Matt Abbott, Nick Mariano, and Brendan Bomberry, SSDM Isaiah Davis-Allen, LSM CJ Costabile, defenseman Jesse Bernhardt, and goalie Niko Amato will represent the Bayhawks in Annapolis on Saturday, July 27, at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. The game is slated to start at 7:00 PM EST and will be broadcast live on ESPN2.
Stanwick will appear in his third All-Star game, having played one in 2013 as an MLL All-Star and one in 2014 as a member of the challenging Team USA. Currently, Stanwick places second on the team with 20 points, good for tenth overall in the league. He is in a four-way tie for first for the league lead in assists with 13.
Colin Heacock will be making his All-Star game debut this season. The third-year attackman has ten points on the season (6G, 4A) and is tied-third on Chesapeake in points. Last season, Heacock lead the Bayhawks in regular season points with 38 (22G, 1 2ptG, 14A).
Lyle Thompson will join Heacock in making their first All-Star game appearance. Due to his box lacrosse commitments in past seasons, the two-time Tewaaraton winner was never added to the All-Star roster. This season, his first complete season in Major League Lacrosse, Thompson leads the league in both goals (23) and points (33). He has been a force to be reckoned with, scoring a hat trick in every appearance this season.
Unlike Thompson or Heacock, Matt Abbott is suiting up for his ninth All-Star game appearance. He has appeared as an MLL All-Star eight times and for the US Men's National Team once. Abbott has appeared in the game each season since 2013. The veteran has 5 points on the year (4G, 1A).
Mariano will be appearing in his first All-Star game this season. The New York native has been one of Chesapeake's most unsung heroes with nine goals on the year, best for second on the team. The pure goal-scorer has been one of the team's best midfielders alongside Abbott.
In his first year in the MLL, Brendan Bomberry has been named to his first All-Star game. The Syracuse alum and Lyle Thompson's Iroquois Nationals teammate has been extremely consistent this season, averaging just over a goal-per-game. In his rookie debut, the midfielder scored two goals, including the game-winner, against the Dallas Rattlers.
This nomination marks Isaiah Davis-Allen's second consecutive All-Star selection. As one of the league's premiere SSDMs, "IDA" has scooped up 16 groundballs this season, placing him in the top five among midfielders. He has also picked up his offensive game this season, scoring his first-career goal and adding three assists.
CJ Costabile, an offensively gifted LSM, will be making his All-Star debut. The Connecticut native has 14 ground balls on the year and three caused turnovers. In 2017, Costabile set single-season bests in goals (9), points (12) and groundballs (48).
Defenseman Jesse Bernhardt has appeared in two MLL All-Star games, but never as an MLL All-Star. In his two appearances (2014 and 2018), Bernhardt had participated as a member of the US National Team. In the three games he has appeared in for the Bayhawks, Jesse leads the team with 5 caused turnovers.
Niko Amato, the 2018 Brine Co-Goalie of the Year, will make his first All-Star appearance. The Maryland graduate has posted a .477 save percentage this season, but is one of the league's best rebound controllers, only giving up 37 rebound saves (lowest in the league among starters).

The Bayhawks (3-2) will travel to Dallas to play the Rattlers (0-6) on Sunday in Frisco, Texas at 4:00 PM EST.
The Bayhawks' next home game is July 20th at 7:00 PM EST. This will be the team's Chesapeake Celebration Night and Rivalry Night against the New York Lizards.
