Lewiston MAINEiacs News Release
Lewiston, ME (QMJHL) - It was a bit of a slow afternoon in Shawinigan, but the Lewiston MAINEiacs are quickly proving that they can be successful, regardless of the type of hockey that is played. On Saturday, Lewiston needed a few extra minutes, but at the 3:29 mark of overtime, Olivier Dame-Malka made a winner out of the visitors, as the MAINEiacs picked up a 2-1 win in front of 3,169 at the Centre Bionest. Lewiston has now won ten straight games.
After nearly two periods of scoreless hockey, the MAINEiacs finally cracked the deadlock with 30.7 seconds left in the middle frame. Jess Tanguy kept the puck alive at the right point, moved toward the slot, and put a shot on goal. Gabriel Girard made the save, but couldn't stop the rebound, which was tapped through by Stefan Fournier.
Early in the third period, the Cataractes had an answer. Benjamin Casavant picked up a loose puck behind the Lewiston net, and proceeded to feed Dave Labrecque with a centering pass. Labrecque got a one-timer off, beating Nicholas Champion for the equalizer.
As the third period and overtime went along, Lewiston was put to the test, especially on the penalty kill. The MAINEiacs were shorthanded eight times in the game, and managed to kill off all eight, giving the bench a much needed spark. That spark ultimately led to a victory, which the visitors captured at the 3:29 mark of the extra session. Olivier Dame-Malka picked off a pass in center ice, faked a slap shot, then slipped a wrist shot through Girard's legs for the winner.
Nicholas Champion was brilliant once again for the MAINEiacs, earning his 14th win in his last 15 starts with 29 saves on 30 shots. Gabriel Girard also faced 30 shots for the Cataractes, but stopped one fewer, suffering the overtime loss.
The MAINEiacs will conclude their three-game road trip on Sunday afternoon at 3:00 against the Quebec Remparts. Lewiston returns home to the Androscoggin Bank Colisee for a pair of games on Wednesday and Friday. Both contests will start at 7:00, with the opponents being Chicoutimi and Moncton.
