LEWISTON, ME -- Michael Chaput's power play goal in the second period was the difference maker, as the Lewiston MAINEiacs defeated the Quebec Remparts 4-2 Sunday evening at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee. The win was the second this week by the MAINEiacs against one of the league's top teams. Lewiston defeated Moncton 5-4 on Wednesday.
Quebec took a 1-0 lead in the first period, on a slapshot goal by Eitenne St.-Germaine. However, Lewiston took the lead later in the period, on goals by Jess Tanguy and Matthew Bissonnette. Bissonnette now has 21 points in 16 games since being traded to Lewiston.
In the second period, former MAINEiac forward Danick Paquette was assessed a roughing penalty, and Lewiston took advantage. Michael Chaput scored his team leading 23rd goal of the season on the ensuing power play, extending the Lewiston lead to 30in Moments later, Ryan Bourque squeezed a shot past Adrien Lemay after a faceoff win, pulling the Remparts within one.
Backed by a solid effort in net by Lemay, the MAINEiacs blanked Quebec in the third period. Quebec went on the power play late in the game, and then pulled the goaltender, giving it a 6-on-4 advantage. However, the MAINEiacs Matt Boyle picked up the pick in his zone and shot it down the ice into the empty net to seal the 4-2 victory.
Lewiston hits the road for a crucial two game set at Baie-Comeau on Friday and Saturday. Lewiston currently sits seven points ahead of Baie-Comeau for the final playoff spot. The MAINEiacs will hold their annual skills competition this Tuesday at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee at 7:00 p.m. Admission is free to all season ticket holders, and $5 for the general public.
