Lewiston MAINEiacs News Release
Lewiston, ME - In what was most certainly the most exciting game to be held at the Colisée this season, the MAINEiacs refused to quit by coming back from a 2 goal deficit with only 59 seconds remaining in regulation for force overtime and a Shoot-Out.
Halifax jumped out with a lead in the first period on a power play goal by the Halifax captain, David Brine 3 minutes into the opening frame. Lewiston was quick to equal the score as Stefan Chaput notched his 3rd of the year. The Mooseheads would regain the 1-goal lead at the 10-minute mark as Pouliot scored his 6th of the season on the power play.
Halifax extended the lead in the second period as Brine scored his 2nd of the game. Before the second intermission, Lewiston's Mathieu Aubin brought the MAINEiacs to within 1 with his 11th on the season.
The 3rd period started in Lewiston favor as Derek Bailey tied the score with his 4th of the season. But Halifax regained a 2-goal lead with goals Brine (his third of the night) and Bodnerchuk. With time dwindling down, the MAINEiacs refused to quit and Aubin scored his 2nd of the night with 59 seconds remaining with the goalie pulled. Then, beyond all expections, Aubin was the hero again as he scored on a nifty face-off win from Marc-Andre Cliche with only 29 seconds remaining to tie the game.
Although the 5-minute 4-on-4 overtime was exciting, with 4 shots by Lewiston and 3 from Halifax, the score would remain tied and the teams would proceed to a shoot-out.
The first three shooters for each team were all successful on the penalty shots as Halifax's Carnegie, Brine and Pouliot were all able to put the puck past Jonathan Bernier. Lewiston's Castonguay, Paiement and Aubin were equal to the task for the home team against Jeremy Duschesne. As the Shoot-Out proceeded to sudden death, the Mooseaheads' Frederick Cabana would be the hero as he scored while Marc-Andre Cliche came up short.
The atmosphere in the Colisée was electric as 2,701 rowdy fans were on their feet for a large part of the game, creating the noisiest environment this facility has seen in a long time.
