Maine Mammoths News Release
COLUMBUS - The Maine Mammoths (6-8) finish their series against the Columbus Lions (8-6) with a win on a last-second stop from the defense. This victory increases the Mammoths' win streak to four wins in a row. This victory over the Lions ruined Columbus' chances of hosting a playoff game, as they are now two games behind the number two Massachusetts Pirates (10-5).
The Lions struck first, but the Mammoths took control of the first quarter, as they stopped the Lions offense and scored two touchdowns to end the first quarter with a 14-7 score. The first play of the second quarter resulted in a Lions touchdown, tying the game at 14. A receiving touchdown from Wide Receiver Rob Brown, a defensive stop, and another touchdown from the Mammoths offense put Maine up 28-14 to end the first half.
The second half was far more interesting, as the Lions started to come back. The Mammoths did a great job of keeping the Lions away from the lead, as the Mammoths took control with a 42-28. To get to 42 points, Wide Receiver Devin Wilson reeled in the touchdown. The Lions scored multiple times, but could not take the lead from the Mammoths. With five seconds left, the Lions had the ball and was down 35-42. A touchdown and a successful PAT would tie the game and send it to overtime for the second time between these two teams. The Mammoths defensive line got to the quarterback and forced the quarterback to scramble deep in their own territory. The quarterback finally went down as time expired, which gave the Mammoths the victory.
The next Mammoths game is versus the number one Jacksonville Sharks (10-5) on Saturday, August 4 at the Cross Insurance Arena for 80's Night/Fan Appreciation Night. If the Mammoths lose, they have a chance to eliminate the Sharks' chances of hosting a playoff game.
