Series Record: 1-0, Mahoning Valley

Last Meeting: Thunder 54, Jungle Kats 20

Streaks: Thunder Lost 5; Jungle Kats Lost 3

Coaches: Mike Hold (30-32 Reg. Season, First year w/Thunder, 5th overall)

Tony Missick (9-15 Reg. Season, First year w/ Jungle Kats, 2nd overall)

THE STAKES: Both Mahoning Valley and Cincinnati are looking to snap losing streaks this Saturday night. The Thunder enters the game on a five-game skid while the Jungle Kats have lost three straight, and six of their last seven. While Cincinnati is all but out of the playoff picture, sitting at the bottom of the American Conference East Standings, the Thunder are still alive, but can't afford another loss.

THE SERIES: This week's game is the second meeting in the history of the series. On April 21, the Thunder defeated the Jungle Kats 54-20. This marked the last Thunder victory, as they are currently riding a five-game losing streak. The Jungle Kats 20 points scored, marked the lowest total Mahoning Valley has allowed all season. Fortunately for the Thunder, Cincinnati is 1-7 on the season, having lost three in a row. Their lone victory did come at home however, a 35-32 win over Fort Wayne at U.S. Bank Arena.

THE IFs:

If Mahoning Valley defeats Cincinnati, it would ...

- Mark their first sweep of an opponent in their history

- Snap their current five-game losing streak

- Give the Thunder their first win since April 21 vs. Cincinnati

- Give the Thunder a 2-2 record away from the Chevrolet Centre

The Last Time Out:

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The Manchester Wolves picked up their first road victory of the year, a 50-40 win over the Mahoning Valley Thunder in front of 3,349 fans on Cortland Banks Field at the Chevrolet Centre on Friday night. The Thunder (3-5) extended their losing streak to five straight while the Wolves (4-4) gained sole-possession of second place in the American Conference East Division. Wolves QB Mark Radlinski finished 20-of-35 for 242 yards and five touchdowns. His lone interception was returned 50-yards for a touchdown by Thunder DB Maurice Taylor. The Thunder had not intercepted a pass since April 21 versus Cincinnati, and the score was the first defensive touchdown of the year for the Thunder. Radlinski connected with five different receivers on the night, spreading touchdowns to three of them. He added one rushing touchdown - a one-yard scamper in the third quarter. In his first career arenafootball2 start, former Duke Blue Devil and Thunder QB Mike Schneider finished 20-of-31 for 200 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions. He added one rushing touchdown to pull the Thunder within 10 with 31 seconds remaining in the game. Thunder WR DeMarcus Mathes led all receivers with nine catches for a game-high 122 yards and two scores. FB Tim Murphy added a 33-yard touchdown run and TE Jamel Lee scored his first career touchdown on a 19-yard pass from Schneider. Wolves K Dylan Pohlman booted a 45-yard field goal in the third quarter, his longest this season. Wolves WR Ari Confesor earned Schutt Offensive Player of the Game honors for his six-reception, 78 yard performance. Taylor nabbed the ADT Defensive Player of the Game award following his 9.0 tackle, one PBU, one forced fumble and interception return of 50-yards for a touchdown.

THIS WEEK'S QUOTES:

MIKE HOLD, on QB Mike Schneider's first start: "Mike played well at times and there were some things he needs to work on. He knows that. He left everything on the field and that is all we can ask of our guys. They played hard as a team and we almost pulled it off."

QB MIKE SCHNEIDER, on his performance: "I know I can play better. I have to play better in order for us to win. I guess there were some positives but I know there is room for improvement."

QB MIKE SCHNEIDER, on his first career start: "It felt good to hear the reception of the crowd when I was introduced. I had a lot of friends and family out there, so it felt like high school again."

On The Road Again: The Thunder now embark on a month of June that will see them playing four or their next five games away from the Valley. After the Cincinnati game, the Thunder travel to Green Bay before returning home for a match-up against Quad City on June 16. Then after a very timely bye week, Mahoning Valley travel to take on divisional rival Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, followed by a trip to Louisville on July 7.

MILESTONES: Having never played an af2 game before, every play in the home opener was some kind of new Thunder record. Here are some of the most notable facts that have made it into the Mahoning Valley Record Book:

First TD Pass: Glen Gauntt to Chris Archie

First TD Rush: Tim Frost

First Play from Scrimmage: Gauntt pass to Kenneth Johnson for nine yards

First Interception: Brian Majors

First Fumble Recovery: Mike Lane

First Interception return for a touchdown: Maurice Taylor

PLAYERS/MATCHUPS TO WATCH:

Catchin' Up: The balanced receiving corps of the Thunder continues to impress, as three Thunder receivers average over 61 yards a game. WR DeMarcus Mathes recorded his second 100-yd receiving game last week against Manchester, catching nine passes for 122 yards. With WR Chris Johnson going on the IR for the rest of the season, the responsibility is on Mathes, and WR's Kenneth Johnson and Chris Archie to keep up the strong performances.

BE LIKE MIKE: New Thunder QB Mike Schneider made his first career af2 start last week against Manchester. Schneider completed 20-of-31 passes, for 200 yards and three touchdowns. On the season he has completed 27 of 51, for 294 yards and four touchdowns.

TAYLOR MADE: DB Maurice Taylor was awarded Defensive Player of the Game last week against Manchester. Taylor picked off Manchester QB Matt Radlinski in the Wolves first possession of the second half, and returned it 50 yards for a touchdown. This was Taylor's fourth interception of the year, and was the first return touchdown for the Thunder in their brief history. Taylor finished the game with nine tackles, including eight solo, and a forced fumble. This was the second time this season Taylor was awarded Defensive Player of the Game. The first time was in Week 4 against the Cincinnati Jungle Kats.
