
Mahoning Valley Scraps the Spikes in 9-1 Victory

NILES, OH - The Mahoning Valley Scrappers took the first game of the series from the Spikes, 9-1, at Eastwood Field Sunday night. The Scrappers held the Spikes to only three hits on the night.
Mahoning Valley jumped ahead early, scoring four runs on five hits in the first inning off Spikes' starter Emilis Guerrero. Every hitter in the Scrappers' lineup had at least one hit Sunday night.
The Spikes scored their lone run of the game in the fourth inning when Jeremy Farrell singled to score Andy Vasquez. Vasquez reached base earlier in the inning after being hit by a pitch. Farrell contributed two of the Spikes three hits of the night.
Yoffri Martinez and Carlos Amaro combined to pitch five innings of relief for the Spikes. The two allowed only one run and five total hits.
Spikes' starter Guerrero (1-5) was on the hook for the loss after allowing eight runs on 10 hits in three innings.
Russell Young (3-2) earned the win for the Scrappers, pitching five innings and allowing one run and three hits. The Mahoning Valley bullpen held the Spikes scoreless for the final three innings of the game.
The Spikes finish their five-game road trip tomorrow against the Scrappers at Eastwood Field. First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. with Ramon Aguero (1-6) set to take the mound for the Spikes. The Scrappers will counter with P.J. Zocchi (2-2). All the action can be heard on the Spikes Radio Network, 95.3/3WZ, beginning at 6:50 p.m.
The Spikes return home Wednesday night to continue the Sawbuck Series against the Williamsport Crosscutters at 7:05 p.m. Medlar Field at Lubrano Park will host Bark in the Park on Wednesday and Skyy Dogs USA and Rockin' Ray will be on hand as well.
