San Antonio Scorpions News Release
San Antonio Scorpions President and General Manager, Howard Cornfield, announced on Tuesday that the club and the Gordon Hartman Family Foundation raised $37,774 for the WINGS Foundation of San Antonio as a result of "Maggie's Wish" Breast Cancer Awareness Auction on October 5th.
The Scorpions hosted the "Maggie's Wish" Charity Auction following their match with the Silverbacks, and auctioned off game-worn pink Scorpions jerseys as well as other great items. This unique auction and player talent show achieved the goal of raising money and awareness for the cause.
"Our fans and players rallied to the cause of supporting breast cancer awareness to a level we could not have even dreamed of in our inaugural auction," said Cornfield. "Most of us have been touched by this hideous disease and Soccer for a Cause is proud to be able to support others in need."
The Scorpions had planned this original event for months, but it took on an added importance when team owner Gordon Hartman's wife, Maggie, was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was Maggie's wish that the organization help raise awareness for early detection and research.
"I cannot express just how proud I am of our fans and players for their incredible support of "Maggie's Wish" night," said Hartman. "The way our fans gave from the heart once again proves that we have the best fans anywhere."
After their 1-0 victory over Atlanta, the Scorpions auctioned off stunning items in the one and a half hour event, including items generously donated by Soccer for a Cause partners. Following the early stages of the auction, players and coaches performed hilarious live skits and showcased their talents in pre-recorded videos before helping to auction off their own game-worn jersey. Skits can be viewed on the Scorpions YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/sanantonioscorpions.
Scorpions forward, Esteban Bayona, impressed the crowd with his uncanny impression of the late Michael Jackson, dancing to the classic "Billy Jean" on the stage at Toyota Field. Walter Ramirez and the Morganaires (comprised of defender Stephen DeRoux, Hartman, and Cornfield) serenaded five lucky ladies on the stage, before Ramirez's and DeRoux's jersey were auctioned off to the crowd. Ramirez's number 21 jersey sold for the highest amount, going for $1,000 to the incredibly supportive fans. Both midfielder Pat Phelan and goalkeeper Jeremy Vuolo's jerseys came in second, selling for over $800 a piece. The Rapinoe United States Women's National Team signed jersey donated by Nike was the high earner at the auction, selling to a lucky fan for $1,400, while the Clint Dempsey US national team jersey sold for $600.
A Scorpions Charity Auction will become an annual event for Scorpions fans and the organization. The mission of WINGS is to provide comprehensive breast health services to women in South and Central Texas. WINGS focuses on filling the void between detection and treatment.
