Mad Ants Prevail in Battle of Bigs at 2013 NBA D-League Showcase
January 9, 2013 - NBA G League (G League) News Release
RENO, NEV., Jan. 9, 2013 - Two big men from completely different backgrounds led their teams into battle at the 2013 NBA D-League Showcase. When you take in a game in the NBA D-League, you need to take into consideration that two players may not only be competing against each other on the floor, but they may also be competing to become the next GATORADE Call-up.
For today at least, Luke Harangody and the Fort Wayne Mad Ants got the best of Tim Ohlbrecht and the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, as they took control in the fourth quarter to lock down a 116-97 win.
Harangody is trying to work his way back to the NBA, where he was waived by the Cleveland Cavaliers in November. He was always considered a promising prospect, even as an underclassman at Notre Dame, but since he just hasn't been able to stick on a roster since coming into the league
Harangody finished Tuesday with a season-high 27 points on 11-of-25 shooting and notched a double-double by grabbing 18 rebounds, which matches his season high from a win on Dec. 28 over Texas.
Ohlbrecht, the Vipers' center, playing his first season in the United States after playing as a professional in Germany since 2005, turned in perhaps his finest performance of the season recording a team-high 22 points and nine rebounds.
He was passed over in the 2010 NBA Draft, the same draft Harangody was selected in the second round with the 52nd overall pick by the Boston Celtics. He has an NBA body at 6-11, 225 pounds and had no issues scoring on Harangody and the Mad Ants defense. He came into the game with an average of 13.6 points and 6.6 rebounds on the season. His game continues to develop as he has scored in double-figures now in 10 of his last 12 games.
Like many international players when they first play in the NBA or in the NBA D-League, he is still working on staying out of foul trouble and improving his defensive skills. In the loss to the Mad Ants he committed five personal fouls, which limited him in the second-half.
Fort Wayne's offense took it up a notch in the fourth quarter, tallying 39 points. Tony Mitchell collected 20 points and nine rebounds and Ron Howard recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 assists.
Fort Wayne will return to action tomorrow when they take on Tulsa at 10 A.M. PST. Rio Grande Valley has completed their 2013 NBA D-League Showcase slate going 1-1.
