Chicago Machine News Release
It was the second of back-to-back games between Los Angeles and Chicago with the Machine still unable to stack up against the Riptide as L.A. took the game 14-8. Intense, physical play by the defense and a strong effort from Sean Morris could not overcome a fantastic play in goal by Riptide goaltender Tillman Johnson, which Machine Head Coach, Kevin Finneran called "the finest performance I've ever seen."
In the first quarter, Los Angeles shut out the Machine 4-0 with three straight goals by Riptide attackman Michael Watson. Morris retailiated for the Machine in the second quarter with the first of three goals which would come throughout the game. The Riptide then scored two goals in just a six-second span; the first scored by Andrew Combs and assisted by Watson. The teams swapped goals to close out the half with a 7-3 Los Angeles lead.
The Riptide began the third almost exactly as they did the third, but this time with five unanswered goals. It was Sean Morris of the Machine who stopped the wave of scoring by the Riptide with one just four seconds left in the quarter to make the score 12-4 going into the fourth.
Starting with back-to-back goals, the Machine was into the fourth quarter dominating 3-1 against the Riptide. Steve Vallone then came out strong for Los Angeles and tallied a two-point goal halfway through the quarter. Doug Shanahan then blasted a two-point goal from far beyond the two-point arc to answer back, but the Machine was still unable to to bring in the win. Tillman Johnson was honored the Bud Light MVP of the game for his fantastic play in goal.
"This game was still a disappointment for us," said Finneran. "We need to play smarter lacrosse and have more discipline when we're on the field."
The Machine will host the next game of the season next weekend as they challenge the Long Island Lizards. Face-off is set for 7:00pm at the Sports Complex at Benedictine University. For more information, visit www.chicagomachine.com.
