Mac Carruth Earns First WHL Shutout in a 3-0 Winterhawks Win Tuesday

Mac Carruth stopped all 26 shots he faced Tuesday for his first career WHL shutout as the Winterhawks defeated the Everett Silvertips 3-0 at the Memorial Coliseum Tuesday in the regular season home finale.

Carruth stopped 10 shots in the first period, seven in the second period and nine in the third in the blanking.

The Winterhawks opened the scoring 12:09 into the first period when Spencer Bennett took the puck behind the Everett net, fed it out front to Ty Rattie, who fired it past Silvertips goaltender Thomas Heemskerk to give Portland a 1-0 lead. It would be the lone goal of the first period.

The two teams were scoreless in the second period, although Portland outshot the Silvertips 19-7 in the frame, with Heemskerk turning away every Winterhawk attempt to keep the score at 1-0 heading into the third period.

Portland then struck just 27 seconds into the third period when Chris Francis found Bennett in front, who wheeled around and put it past Heemskerk to make it 2-0. The Hawks then made it 3-0 when a shot by Luca Sbisa from the point rang off the crossbar and into the net, giving the Hawks a lead they wouldn't relinquish.

Bennett was in on all three goals, with one tally and two assists for three points, tying his career-high. Rattie finished with a goal and an assist for two points.

The Winterhawks travel to Chilliwack Friday and Seattle Saturday to wrap up the 2009-10 regular season. The Playoffs will begin the weekend of March 19.
