Lynx earn point on the road
June 15, 2006 - USL First Division (USL-1)
Toronto Lynx News Release
The Toronto Lynx picked up their second point of the season this evening, playing to a 2-2 draw away to Miami FC at Tropical Park Stadium in Miami, Florida.
The Lynx entered tonight's match hoping to earn points after their season had gotten off to a slow start, leaving them with a record of 0-7-1 after their first 8 matches.
Toronto seemed destined for another defeat after Miami went ahead through former Brazilian World Cup champion Romario's sixth goal of the season. He slotted home Sean Fraser's pass in the eight minute giving Miami an early lead. Things got worse for Toronto four minutes later. Mario Rodriguez collected Diego Walsh's pass and got past his marker, and with only Lynx goalkeeper Richard Goddard to beat, sent the ball into the back of the net.
Despite being down 2-0 after twelve minutes, Toronto showed great resolve and responded in the 17th minute. Damien Pottinger scored his first goal in Lynx colours after receiving a pass from Jamie Dodds.
Dodds put the equalizer past Miami âkeeper Hunter Gilstrap in the 30th minute off of a solo effort, and it was 2-2 after the first 45 minutes of play.
Both clubs tried to take the lead throughout the first half, but both goalkeepers and back lines stood firm and it was 2-2 at the final whistle.
Jamie Dodds scored one goal and assisted on the other, while Damien Pottinger scored his first goal for the club. Today's two goals ended Toronto's scoring drought that had brought them only one goal through 8 matches.
Toronto goalkeeper Richard Goddard was excellent in goal tonight, making 10 saves (including 6 in the second half) through 90 minutes of play.
Toronto improves to 0-7-2 as a result of tonight's tie, ands remains in 12th place of the USL First Division.
Toronto continues its tropical tour when it takes on the Puerto Rico Islanders on Sunday June 18th in Bayamon, Puerto Rico at 5:00 PM.
Notes: This was Toronto's second meeting with Miami this season. The first encounter ended 1-0 for Miami in Toronto last month.
