LumberJax Face Mammoth Task

January 23, 2007 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Portland Lumberjax News Release

PORTLAND, Jan. 23, 2007 - After losing two games this past weekend during their home-and-home series against the Arizona Sting (3-1), the Portland LumberJax are ready for a win and looking to topple the Colorado Mammoth (4-1). The LumberJax travel to Denver, Colo. on Thursday, Jan. 25, 2007 for a 6 p.m. (PST) Western Division match up against the 2006 National Lacrosse League (NLL) Champions.

"This is another big divisional game for us," said Head Coach and General Manager Derek Keenan. "Obviously after last weekend, we are 0-2 in Western Division play, and we can't afford to get buried in the standings this early in the season. The most important thing this week for us is to improve on how we are playing. Even though we won our first two games, I still don't feel that we played very well and it has compounded, turning into two losses last weekend. We will look back on it, learn and move forward."

The Jax are 2-0 against the Mammoth and have beaten the team twice by a score of 12-11 (Jan. 21, 2006 and March 12, 2006). Although carrying a perfect record against Colorado, the Mammoth did not play Portland in the post-season and advanced to the league Championship game against the Buffalo Bandits where they earned the coveted NLL Champion's Cup.

The Jax flew into this past weekend with a perfect record (2-0) and looked to cement their early position in the division. However, two key losses led to casualties including the team's home and away regular season winning streaks and a drop in the standings (fourth). Now the team will compete against the league's best on the road at the Pepsi Center on Thursday, with an opportunity for redemption.

"We're playing the NLL Champions," Keenan added. "I think we'll be inspired by that, as well as the importance of the game in the standings."

The 6 p.m. (PST) game will be viewable on a two-hour tape delay on PDX 49 (channel 13) at 8 p.m. (PST). Fans can go to On Deck Sports Bar & Grill (The Jax pre, post and away-game viewing party location!) to watch the LumberJax take on the Colorado Mammoth and cheer as Portland fights to topple the top team in the Western Division.
