
Lumberjacks Win Season Opener With Shootout

Waterloo, Iowa - Muskegon Lumberjacks new defensemen Carson Vance scores the lone shootout goal to give the Lumberjacks a 3-2 shootout victory over the Waterloo Black Hawks.
The first period was a ton of back and forth hockey, with the Lumberjacks and Black Hawks trading opportunities. However, forward Dominick Sacco was able to create an offensive zone turnover and score on his own rebound for the first goal of the game. The goal was unassisted.
The second period saw the ice begin to tilt in the Black Hawks favor. They outshot the Lumberjacks 16-7 during the period, but goalie Joey Daccord was able to keep every shot out of the net. Late in the second, new Lumberjacks forward Jake Coleman received a pass from Robbie DeMontis while streaking down the right hand boards and fired a shot over the left shoulder of Black Hawks goalie Cale Morris to give the Lumberjacks a 2-0 lead.
The third period started out just like the first, back and forth action with the Lumberjacks dictating majority of the play. However, when captain Trevor Hamilton threw a big hit into Black Hawks forward Nick Swaney and received a major penalty, changing the entire complexion of the game. Black Hawks denfesemen Ben Newhouse was able to blast a shot through a couple bodies to cut the Lumberjacks lead in half. Then, two minutes later, after a fortuitous bounce, Shane Bowers went in on a breakaway and leveled the game at two.
With only a couple minutes left in the game, it looked like the Black Hawks comeback was complete when Brandon Schultz was able to bat the puck out of mid air and into the back of the net. Fortunately, the referee ' s waved the goal off and reviewed it, only to confirm their earlier call. The game would remain scoreless until the end of regulation.
Overtime started with both teams trading scoring chances. After the four-minute mark, the play switched from 4 on 4 to 3 on 3 and it was more of the same. Back and forth open ice hockey with chances on both ends. At the end of the seven minutes, the game remained at a 2-2 tie and was heading for a shootout.
The shootout remained scoreless after the first four shooters. Will Graber, Dante Palecco, Matej Paulovic and Rem Pitlick all failed with their attempts. During the fifth round, newcomer Carson Vance was sent out and able to score the only shootout goal of the game, giving the Lumberjacks their first win of the season.
The Lumberjacks are off for a week until their home opener on October 3rd at L.C. Walker Arena. The Lumberjacks take the U17 United States National Team Development Program looking to improve upon a three game winning streak going back to preseason. Puck drop is at 7:15.
