Lumberjacks Falter on the Road to Green Bay, 3-1
April 12, 2013 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Muskegon Lumberjacks News Release
GREEN BAY, WI - For a moment, it looked like the Muskegon Lumberjacks would come out firing on all cylinders as they would score less than a minute into the game, but would have no more answers offensively as Green Bay would clamp down defensively and get enough offense throughout to come away with a 3-1 victory tonight at the Green Bay Resch Center.
The Lumberjacks (31-22-10, 72 points) would strike quickly just 49 seconds into the game as Patrick Koudys would wrist home first career USHL goal from the left point through Gamblers Goaltender Tony Kujava's (10-6-1) five-hole to make it 1-0 Lumberjacks.
The score would hold late into the opening period when Green Bay would get the equalizer at the 15:26 mark on the power play with Kevin Irwin's 20th goal of the season from teammate Kyle Novak. Muskegon would outshoot Green Bay after one period of play, 9-7.
The second period would be mostly a stalemate until the final three minutes when the Gamblers (36-23-4, 76 points) would take a two-goal lead with a pair of goals 48 seconds apart beginning at the 17:11 mark with Irwin's second of the night as he one-timed a shot home while parked in front of Lumberjacks Goaltender Kevin Lindskoug (23-18-6) from Novak to make it 2-1 Green Bay.
Shortly after, Green Bay would tally another power play goal at the 17:59 mark as Sheldon Dries would wrist his 22nd goal of the season from between the faceoff circles top shelf past Lindskoug's glove side from Jordan Gross and Gustav Olofsson to quickly make it 3-1 Gamblers. Green Bay would own the shot chart in the second period outshooting Muskegon 12-3 in the middle frame.
The third period would feature no scoring as the Lumberjacks would have two power play opportunities in the final stanza, but come up empty on the scoreboard. Muskegon would outshoot Green Bay in the final period by a 7-4 margin, and Lindskoug would be lifted for the extra attacker with 1:52 remaining in regulation, but nothing would come of it.
Green Bay would outshoot Muskegon for the game, 23-19, while the Gamblers power play was the story on the night scoring two power play goals in four opportunities. Gamblers Goaltender Tony Kujava would stop 18 of 19 shots on the night to reach double digits in victories this season, while Kevin Lindskoug would stop 20 of 23 shots for the Lumberjacks. Green Bay was led offensively by Kevin Irwin's two goals along with Kile Novak's two assists. Muskegon falls to 3-4-1 against Green Bay this season with one meeting to go tomorrow night on the road.
The Lumberjacks will finish their 2012-13 regular season tomorrow night at 8:05 pm on the road against the same Green Bay Gamblers team. Muskegon has qualified for the 2013 USHL Clark Cup Playoffs that will begin on Wednesday, April 17th at 8:35 pm against the top-seeded Dubuque Fighting Saints.
