DUBUQUE, Iowa - The Muskegon Lumberjacks fell just short in the opening contest of their pro-style, three-in-three weekend series by a final score of 4-to-3 to the Dubuque Fighting Saints on Friday, April 8, 2022, from the Mystique Community Ice Center. The Jacks flirted with the lead numerous times, but it was the Saints who would fight back to earn the two points with the victory. Muskegon received goals from Joey Larson, Ben Strinden, and Quinn Hutson, but it ultimately wasn't enough in the 4-to-3 defeat. With the loss, Muskegon is still locked in third place in the Eastern Conference standings with an overall record of 29-21-3-3 and 64 points.
1st Period
The Lumberjacks drew first blood while on the power play, courtesy of Joey Larson to make it a 1-to-0 lead for Muskegon. Larson's 31st goal of the season was assisted by Ben Strinden and Quinn Hutson at 8:55 for the first goal of the game.
Dubuque would respond with Stephen Halliday at 14:32 of the first period to even the score 1-to-1. Halliday's 32nd lamplighter of the season was assisted by Ryan Beck and Austin Oravetz.
After 20 minutes of action in Dubuque, both teams skated to a 1-to-1 tie heading into the first intermission.
2nd Period
Just 40 seconds into the second period, Muskegon alternate captain Ben Strinden found the back of the net to restore the Lumberjack lead at 2-to-1. Strinden's 24th goal of the year was assisted by Tyler Dunbar and Jacob Guevin.
About a minute later at 1:56, the Saints would fight right back to tie the game from William Hallén 2-to-2 in the middle period. Hallén's eighth goal of the season was assisted by Jackson Hallum and Davis Burnside to level the score for the second time on the night.
At 14:39 of the period, the Jacks jumped back into the driver's seat with a tally from Quinn Hutson to increase the score to 3-to-2. Hutson's 30th goal of the season was assisted by Phil Tresca and Tyler Hotson.
However, Dubuque would find a way to score the equalizer yet again, this time from Kenny Connors at 18:49 to tie the game 3-to-3. Connors's 24th goal of the season went unassisted.
After the second period, each team struck twice, but the score remained even 2-to-2 through 40 minutes of action.
3rd Period
While shorthanded, the Saints pulled ahead for the first time after a marker from Shawn O'Donnell 100 seconds into the third period. O'Donnell's fourth goal of the season was assisted by Michael Feenstra to give Dubuque the 4-to-3 lead.
After buzzing around in the attacking zone for the last few minutes of regulation, it was not to be for Muskegon as they dropped the first game of the three-in-three against the Dubuque Fighting Saints by a final score of 4-to-3.
