Muskegon Lumberjacks News Release

The Muskegon Lumberjacks have completed two trades that will change the team's offensive attack a bit.

On Wednesday the Jacks announced that they have traded rookie forward Payton Nelson, who saw limited playing time this season, to the Des Moines Buccaneers in exchange for forward Ethan Fredericks.

Nelson had no goals and two assists for the Jacks this season.

Fredericks,18, was in his second season with Des Moines. Last year he totaled three goals and seven assists in 48 games for the Buccaneers and this year had three goals and one assist in 19 games.

Fredericks obviously has a lot of offensive potential. In 2020-21 he had 36 goals and 26 assists while playing for the Nashville Junior Predators in a 16-Under AAA junior hockey league. In 2019-20 he had 29 goals and 24 assists.

"We wish Payton all the best, and this move allows him to be in the lineup every night," said Steve Lowe, the Lumberjacks' President of Hockey Operations. "By acquiring Ethan we get a player who will push the internal competition in our own lineup. We are excited to add a very talented forward to our group this year and next year."

Last week the Jacks traded second-year forward Tyler Hotson to Sioux City for Chase Stefanek, a young guy who apparently has a ton of potential.

Hotson was getting a lot more ice time for the Jacks this season and was playing well, with five goals and 10 assists.

Stefanek,16-year-old forward, is currently playing prep school hockey at Mount St. Charles Academy in Rhode Island, the same school that promising Lumberjacks forward Sacha Boisvert attended.

Last season Stefanek had 24 goals and 47 assists. He will not play with the Jacks this season, but is expected to be a valuable asset next year.

"I know we're very excited to add a quality player for the future," said Lumberjacks Coach Mike Hamilton.
