
Lugnuts hold back Whitecaps, 6-5

COMSTOCK PARK, Mich. - The Lansing Lugnuts (25-32, 56-69) pulled ahead early and staved off the West Michigan Whitecaps (34-22, 71-54), 6-5, on Tuesday night at Fifth Third Ballpark.
Lansing pitchers combined to hold the Whitecaps to 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position.
After a run against Lansing starter Brad Allen (Win, 5-5) in the first, the Lugnuts stormed ahead with a four-run top of the second inning.
The Lugnuts opened the second with four consecutive base hits. Center fielder D.J. Davis opened the innings with a triple on the first pitch from West Michigan starter Matt Davenport (Loss, 5-5), and shortstop Dawel Lugo brought him in with an RBI single.
An RBI double by Justin Atkinson pushed the Lugnuts ahead, and RBIs by Chaz Frank and Derrick Loveless capped the big inning.
After the Lugnuts scored a run in the fifth, catcher Chris Schaeffer pushed the Lansing lead to 6-3 in the sixth inning, tucking an RBI single inside third base.
The additional run proved important. In the bottom of the seventh, West Michigan left fielder Jeff Holm launched a two-run home run to bring the Whitecaps within one run.
Lansing reliever Brady Dragmire (Save, 3) worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning, striking out Holm to close out the win. Dragmire's has worked perfect ninth innings in each of his last three appearances.
Atkinson finished the night 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI, scoring a pair of runs. Frank also had a three-hit game.
The Lugnuts and Whitecaps finish their season series on Wednesday night at Fifth Third Ballpark. Right-hander Miguel Castro (1-1, 5.52) starts on the mound for Lansing, countered by righty Austin Kubitza (10-2, 2.53) for the Whitecaps.
The Lugnuts return to Cooley Law School Stadium on a Labatt Thirsty Thursday, August 21st, with $2 beers, $2 sodas, craft beer specials and a postgame concert featuring Starfarm. Gametime against the South Bend Silver Hawks is 7:05 p.m.
