Edmonton Chill News Release
Once again the Chill showed their offensive muscle early as they built a 17-point lead, only to give it away as they often do. Still, the home side was able to withstand the charge as the Portland Chinooks managed to draw within one point late in the fourth before the Chill pulled away at the free-throw line and came away with their seventh consecutive win, 132-124.
The game opened with an unbelievable pace as the two teams traded baskets up and down the floor with Edmonton's JR Patrick and Portland's Dean Browne each scored 11 on the way to a 44-41 score after 12 minutes. Both teams seemed to cool down in the second quarter as the defense ramped up for both sides leading to a half-time score of 69-60.
The Chill opened the second half on the offensive, once more led by team captain JR Patrick who poured in nine in the frame and help the Chill build a lead that stood at, 17 midway through the quarter. The Chinooks came storming back though, led by the outside shooting of Larry Smith (30 points) and the inside work of Dean Browne (33 points). The Chinooks continued to fight into the final stanza and even tied the game briefly. However, the Chill held their focus and played effectively over the final four minutes with a lead that varied from three to six points, before sewing up the win with some clutch shots from the charity stripe.
JR Patrick was the Chill's leading scorer with 27 points, Jermaine Bucknor and Rashaun Broadus were the co-leaders with 10 rebounds apiece, and four different players handed out three helpers each.
The same two teams will jump it up Saturday night from the Grant MacEwan gym at 7:11pm before the Chill head out for a seven-game road trip next week.
