Louisiana IceGators News Release
LAFAYETTE, LA - The Louisiana IceGators (7-30) began the night with a several new faces on the ice and other players not on the ice. The 'Gators hoped that the roster shake-ups would spark the team and it did. Despite opening strong the 'Gators fell one goal short to the Pensacola Ice Flyers (21-10), 4-3.
The 'Gators put pressure on the Ice Flyers of Pensacola in the opening period. Louisiana opened the period by getting the only shots on goal in the first five minutes of the game. Beau McLaughlin (LOU) and the IceGators struck first when McLaughlin scored his 23rd goal of the season. The 'Gators did not stop with just one goal in the period; Ryan Howarth (LOU) scored his first goal of the season with 4:37 left in the period.
Louisiana began the second period with a 2-0 lead. This is the biggest lead after the first period that the 'Gators have had during the 19-game losing streak. The second period ended up becoming a barrage of goals for the Ice Flyers. Pensacola was first struck when Brett Liscomb (PEN) scored his 12th goal of the season. Less than three minutes later, Matt Whitehead (PEN) tied the game at 2-2 when he scored his ninth goal against the IceGators this season. At the 11:15 mark in the period, Tanner Shultz (PEN) put the Ice Flyers up for the first time in the game. Twenty seconds later Chris Wilson (PEN) put Pensacola up 4-2. The 'Gators finally ended the onslaught when McLaughlin scored his second goal of the game with 6:03 left in the period.
The Ice Flyers began the final period with a 4-3 lead and continued the attack. Pensacola had the first five shots of the period but IceGators' goalie, Scott Darling, turned all of the attempts away. With 14:20 left in the game Erik Stoyanovich (PEN) was called for goalie interference and the 'Gators went on a power play. Louisiana was able to get two shots on goal during the two-minute penalty but none of them got past Pensacola's goalie Thomas Lee. In the final 30 seconds of the game Louisiana needed a goal but each of their three shots were denied and the Pensacola Ice Flyers escaped the Dome with a 4-3 victory.
"We had new players on the ice and I liked the effort that I saw for most of the game," replied a frustrated IceGators Head Coach Kevin Kaminski after losing to the Ice Flyers. "We have to put together an entire game, all three periods, to end this losing streak."
The 'Gators are back in action tomorrow against the Mississippi Surge in the Dome at 7:05. Then the 'Gators will hit the road, traveling to Columbus to take on the Cottonmouths on January 22.
