LouCity Hangs on for Rivalry Road Win Over Indy Eleven

Louisville City FC News Release

Louisville City FC took a halftime lead Saturday and - in contrast to a midweek loss - held onto the advantage in a critical complete-game performance at Indy Eleven.

Wilson Harris tapped in an early Ray Serrano corner kick, LouCity absorbed late pressure, and that proved enough to defeat its rival by a 1-0 score at Michael A. Carroll Stadium. The win happened three days after the boys in purple similarly led before falling, 2-1, to FC Tulsa at their home Lynn Family Stadium.

"Halftime came, and you could tell the guys were fatigued," said coach Danny Cruz. "We spoke about needing to suffer to get to where we want to go. We were under it for sure."

LouCity found its goal during another dominant opening 45 minutes, with consecutive corners leading to the strike. After Amadou Dia's shot from distance was parried away and out of bounds, Serrano served up the winning set piece to Harris in the 20th minute.

Indy Eleven turned up its attack on the other side of the break, peppering nine shots - three on target - during the second half. Though Stats Perform didn't count any of those attempts as "Big Chances," goalkeeper Oliver Semmle delivered key saves, particularly when he smothered Robert Molina's 74th-minute chance in the box.

"This is a very difficult place to play," Cruz said. "These guys are basically playing in sand. Both teams have to do it, but I was really proud of the defensive group. Ollie made some critical saves for us."

Saturday's victory kept LouCity (6-3-2, 20 points) third on the USL Championship's Eastern Conference table. City holds a game in hand over both clubs ahead.

Indy Eleven (3-5-3, 12 points) dropped to ninth in the standings, outside of a playoff spot,. The Eleven were the fifth club LouCity has held scoreless this season, ranking the boys in purple second in the league in clean sheets.

"I thought we were really relentless defensively - defending in the box especially," Harris said. "...Especially since we're rivals, we don't take this one lightly at all. It was a good environment tonight, and I love a good environment. I think the boys do too."

LouCity's midweek loss to FC Tulsa is the club's only league defeat since April 1, a span of seven games.

"This is this league. There's ups and downs, but we're in a good spot," Cruz said. "I've been saying it: We'll continue to get better as the season progresses. We're happy ultimately with the three points at a difficult place."

LouCity will remain away for its next game, traveling to play the Hartford Athletic on Saturday, June 3.
