Los Angeles Galaxy Defender Ugo Ihemelu Suspended and Fined

NEW YORK (Aug. 29, 2006) - The Major League Soccer Disciplinary Committee today suspended Los Angeles Galaxy defender Ugo Ihemelu for two games and fined him $750 for serious foul play in the Galaxy's 5-2 win against D.C. United on Saturday, Aug. 26.

Ihemelu's suspension and fine were imposed for serious foul play against United midfielder Domenic Mediate. The play occurred in the 78th minute when Ihemelu slide tackled Mediate from behind. Ihemelu's suspension is scheduled to be served over the next two games. The Galaxy travel to play Real Salt Lake on Wednesday, Aug. 30 and face the Kansas City Wizards at home on Saturday, Sept. 2.

Under the terms of the CBA agreement, the Players Union may submit an appeal to the Commissioner for any discipline imposed as a result of an on-field incident resulting in a fine $750 or higher and/or a suspension of two games or more. Upon receipt of the appeal, the Commissioner will designate a time and a place for a hearing to be held as soon as practicable following receipt by the League of the Union's notice of appeal. A suspension shall not be postponed pending appeal.
