Lopez Returns to Bridgeport as First Signing of 2014

(Bridgeport, Conn. - Jan. 31, 2014) - The Bridgeport Bluefish today announced their first addition of the 2014 season, signing infielder Luis Lopez. Lopez returns for his seventh season with the Bluefish, ninth in the Atlantic League and 20th of professional baseball.

"The Bluefish are proud to welcome back Luis Lopez as the first signing of 2014," says Bluefish general manager Ken Shepard. "It's a pleasure to have Luis back in a Bluefish uniform. He has been a tremendous asset to this club and a great presence in the clubhouse since 2008."

In a career-high 137 games with Bridgeport last year, Luis recorded a .260 batting average with 63 RBI and 53 runs scored in 527 at-bats. After six successful seasons in the Park City, Lopez is now among the all-time Bluefish batting leaders, pacing the franchise in games played (776), at-bats (2,887), doubles (138), RBI (412), and walks (385). He also ranks second in hits (805), runs scored (371), and extra-base hits (190).

The former Major Leaguer spent two seasons in the big leagues, his first coming in 2001 with the Toronto Blue Jays. He spent the next two years with Sacramento (AAA, Athletics) of the Pacific Coast League before returning to the Major Leagues with the Montreal Expos in 2004. The infielder's best season came in 1997 with Single-A Hagerstown (South Atlantic) when he paced the league in hits (180) and batting average (.358), while posting career-highs in doubles (47), extra-base hits (63) and RBI (99). In 2,105 career minor league games, Lopez owns a .294 batting average with 2,305 hits, 454 doubles, 168 home runs, 1,235 RBI and 1,107 runs scored.
