LONG BEACH, CA- Simone Peters went 4-for-5 with four RBIs to lead the Long Beach Armada (9-12) to a series opening win over first place Mesa (13-7), 14-5, on Thursday evening. Long Beach pounded out 17 hits in the first game of this four-game Golden Baseball League series, as Ryan Webb added a 4-for-5 night as well. Webb's RBI triple in the second proved to be the game-winner.

The Armada sent 10 men to the plate in the fourth and took a 9-2 lead thanks to five hits and six runs. By the end of the inning, Long Beach had chased Kevin Cheppenko (1-2) from the game, after giving up seven runs on eight hits over three and two-thirds innings. Jeremy Hernandez drove in two with a single, followed by back-to-back RBI singles from Travis McAndrews and Simone Peters to make it 7-2. A two-run single by Jason Larue made it 9-2.

Adam Prettyjohn (4-1) continued to be the team leader in wins, picking up his fourth win after tossing seven innings, giving up five runs on nine hits. Matt Parris made his GBL debut for Long Beach by pitching a scoreless eighth.

The Scorpions got back in the contest with a two-run homer by Juan Lebron as part of a three-run fifth for Yuma to cut the lead to 9-5. It was the second homer of the game for the visitors, as a solo homer by Billy Malone cut an early Armada lead to 2-1.

Armada leftfielder Danny DiPace left the game in the top of the fourth after a leg injury. His status is day-to-day.

The rest of the rotation has been announced for the series. On Friday lefthander David Cuen (1-1, 3.06) will oppose the Armada's Mike Marchesano (2-1, 3.42). On Saturday, former Major Leaguer Rusty Meacham will take to the hill for the Scorpions against John Dillinger and Sunday, Reed Harvey will close out the series for the Armada against Jorge Perez.
