Long Beach Armada News Release

LONG BEACH, CA- Armada righthander Mike Marchesano (3-1) struck out a season-best nine, more than half of his season total, as Long Beach (10-12) won the first two games of their Golden Baseball League series with visiting Yuma (13-8), wining Friday, 5-1. Marchesano went seven and a third innings, giving up just one run on seven hits. The three-game losing streak by the first place Scorpions is their longest of the season.

Mike Hoyt, who got a double play ball to end the eighth, walked the bases full in the ninth, before picking up his third save on the year. Ryan Webb, Travis McAndrews, Samone Peters and Jason Larue each had multi-hit games for the Armada.

The Armada scored early and held on, taking a 2-0 lead in the second, thanks to an RBI single from Bobby Castro and an attempted double steal, in which Castro was caught stealing, while Chris Miller snuck home.

Travis McAndrews added to the lead in the third with an RBI single to make it 3-1. After Long Beach loaded the bases against loser David Cuen (1-2) , Jared Terrebonne came on with a 3-and-1 count, and proceeded to strikeout Miller to end the inning. Cuen went just two and two-thirds innings, giving up three runs on seven hits.

Jason Larue's two-out, two-run homer off of reliever Dane de la Rosa in the seventh gave Long Beach a 5-1 lead. Scorpion reliever Jared Terrebonne had just exited after four shutout innings, of two-hit, five-strikeout baseball, just prior to the blast to leftfield.

A throwing error by Marchesano on a failed pickoff attempt in the third was one of the few mistakes for the righthander, as the error scored the first run for the Scorpions on the night and made it 2-1. But despite three hits in the inning, Miller threw out the first of two base stealers moments later to keep the game in the Armada's favor.

Long Beach ‘s John Dillinger (0-2, 5.60) will oppose former Major Leaguer Rusty Meacham (2-0, 2.55) on Saturday at 7 p.m.
