La Crosse Loggers News Release

LA CROSSE, WI - The Loggers appeared to be in danger after the top of the first inning on Wednesday night.

Eau Claire leadoff hitter Charlie White led off the first with an infield single. The speedy center fielder advanced to second on a fielder's choice and then score on Tim Zier's RBI single. A walk and another single plated two more runs, giving the Express an early 3-0 lead.

Mike Nadratowski (Grand Valley State) wasted no time cutting into Eau Claire's lead. The left fielder singled to the lead off the bottom half of the frame. Johnny Bekakis (Long Beach State) followed up the single with a walk. After back-to-back strikeouts, Kevin Zak (Grand Valley State) hit a hard grounder to Haggerty and the Express shortstop could not handle it. Nadratowski scored and Eau Claire's lead was cut to 3-1 heading into the second.

A pair of Logger errors in the second set up Eau Claire with another bases loaded situation. But Josh Frye (Long Beach State) reached back and fired an 89 MPH fastball past Greg Harisis for the third out of the inning.

La Crosse struck yet again in the bottom of the second. Connor Teykl (Rice) lead things off with a walk and Brandon DeFazio (San Mateo) singled two pitches later. After consecutive outs, Bekakis and catcher Max McDowell (UCONN) collected back-to-back RBI singles to tie the game.

Frye induced his first of two double plays in the top of the third. The right hander threw 97 pitches over the course of five innings; he struck out six batters and walked just two.

The Express opted to lift starter Will Kenny in favor of right-hander Jake Cole in the bottom of the third, but that did not stop La Crosse's offense. Dexter Price (Alabama State) led off with a single and Zak promptly walked, to put two runners on with no one out.

Two batters later, Teykl hit what ended up being the game-winning triple, scoring both Price and Zak.

Freshman Brooks Kriske (USC) pitched two effective innings in relief. Kriske did not allow a hit and struck out three Express batters.

In the top of the eighth, Joel Effertz (UW-La Crosse) came on and also picked up a hold for the Loggers.

Closer Craig Caufield (Memphis) struck out the first two batters of the ninth. With two down and cleanup hitter Tim Zier (2-4) at the plate, the freshman induced a fly out to Defazio, sealing the win.

Nadratowski and Price both collected two hits for the Loggers in the win. Teykl finished with the triple and two RBI's.

The Loggers and Express will be back in action Thursday night at Carson Park. Tune into the Loggers Radio Network at 6:35pm where Micah Schroeder and Nick Rytilahti will bring you all of the action from Eau Claire.
