Local Stars to Suit up for Marlins

Morehead City, N.C.- The Morehead City Marlins are pleased to announce the signings of Whitman Barnes and Kris Lindner for the 2014 season.

Barnes, a native of New Bern, North Carolina, is currently in his freshman season at UNC-Wilmington. The left-handed pitcher had a stellar career at New Bern High School, where he was a three year letter winner. As a senior, Barnes was named the Sun Journal Pitcher-of-the-Year after going 4-1 on the mound with 0.95 ERA. He struck out 59 batters while only walking 18. The 6'1 200-pound Barnes has yet to appear in a game this spring for the Seahawks.

Linder will return home to Morehead City for the summer following his freshman year at Army. The West Carteret grad is off to a fantastic start for the Black Knights. He missed the first three weeks of the season due to injury, but came back in mid-season form. In 30 games, he is hitting at a .301 clip with one home run, 13 RBIs, and ten stolen bases. He also has a .969 fielding percentage in 97 chances. The switch-hitter has seen the majority of his 28 starts come at second base. Lindner was named Patriot League Rookie of the Week on April 7th, after going 7 for 16 with a home run, four RBIs, and six runs scored during games March 31st-April 6th. The Black Knights are off to a 28-12 start, including an 11-4 conference record. Lindner was a three time All-Coastal Conference selection during his career with the Patriots and plans on pursuing a career in aviation.

Morehead City will play host to the 2014 Coastal Plain League All-Star Game. Festivities begin on Saturday July 12th, continue with the Fan Fest and Home Run Derby on Sunday July 13th and conclude with the All-Star Game on Monday July 14th. The home opener is the following night, May 28th, when they again take on the Swampdogs. The Coastal Plain League is the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 18th season in 2014, the CPL features 14 teams playing North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. Furthermore, the CPL has had over 1,100 alumni drafted and 65 alums - including 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner Justin Verlander - make their Major League debut thus far.
