Local Boy Recovering from Traumatic Brain Injury to be Named Honorary Florida Launch Captain
May 16, 2016 - Major League Lacrosse (MLL)
Florida Launch News Release
Scores of diehard lacrosse fans will file into FAU Stadium on May 21 to see the Florida Launch faceoff against the Atlanta Blaze. One fan will arrive Saturday night as a spectator and leave having made his MLL debut. 11-year-old Luca Annunziata will sign a Major League Lacrosse contract to become an official member of the Launch roster and honorary captain for the game.
A Jupiter local, Luca, loves the game of lacrosse but has been sidelined due to a traumatic brain injury suffered last November. Luca spent months in the hospital, even being placed into a medically induced coma for a period of time. It was then that the Florida Launch first heard of the boy's incredible fight to get better. Much to the surprise of Luca, veteran star Casey Powell visited Luca in the hospital and presented him with gifts from the team.
The Launch aren't stopping there to show Luca the power of the lacrosse community. The Annunziata family has been reunited since Powell's first visit as Luca returned home earlier this year and has been recovering steadily. This weekend, Luca will have the full MLL experience beginning with signing his one day deal. After inking the contract he will then lead the team through the tunnel and onto the field. Before the Launch face off specialist gets into position to take the first face off of the game, Luca will get his chance at the X in the ceremonial face off.
The Florida Launch take on the Atlanta Blaze Saturday at FAU Stadium. The Launch are in search of their first win of the 2016 MLL season in their first ever meeting with the newly formed Blaze. Face off is slated for 7:00pm.
