Local BayHawks Management Issues Statement on the Future of the NBA

December 14, 2016 - NBA G League (G League)
Erie BayHawks News Release

Erie, PA (December 14) - In response to today's announcement from the Orlando Magic that they will purchase Erie's existing NBA Development League franchise and relocate to Lakeland, Florida next season, BayHawks local owner Owen McCormick and team president Matt Bresee issued the following joint statement. Neither McCormick, Bresee, nor any of the BayHawks current staff are part of the Lakeland franchise:

As Erie natives, we are committed to trying to find another NBA partner to place a team in Erie starting for the 2017-18 season. We are optimistic as conversations with new potential NBA partners are happening and will know more in the near future. With respect to the process that the NBA is conducting, we are not at liberty to discuss any specifics at this time.

We believe Erie has a great combination of resources that make it an attractive destination for another NBA team to place a Development League team here. The recently renovated Erie Insurance Arena, our long-standing partnership with LECOM and numerous other corporate partners, and a solid base of season ticket members and fans, have all helped contribute to Erie's nine years of off-the-court success in the D-League. Our hope is that next season we can continue to deliver the family fun and entertainment that's become synonymous with the BayHawks.

We will share updates as we know more, but in the meantime our staff remains dedicated to the current season and the full slate of upcoming promotions and special events already planned.

The Erie BayHawks, presented by LECOM, are the NBA Development League affiliate of the Orlando Magic. The NBA Development League, founded in 2001, is the NBA's official minor league whose teams have direct affiliations to NBA franchises. The BayHawks, established in 2008, play their home games at Erie Insurance Arena and were one of the first teams in the Development League to establish a marquee partnership. The BayHawks marquee partner, the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM), LECOM School of Dental Medicine and LECOM School of Pharmacy offer innovative and affordable education in osteopathic medicine, dentistry and pharmacy. From campuses in Erie, Pennsylvania, Greensburg, Pennsylvania and Bradenton, Florida, LECOM provides student-centered pathways to prepare the next generation of healthcare professionals. LECOM physicians serve as the BayHawks medical staff, the team practices at the state-of-the-art LECOM Medical Fitness & Wellness Center, and together the BayHawks and LECOM promote education, health and wellness throughout Erie county.
