
Lizards Reclaim Massey, McCabe and Moran in MLL Expansion Draft

Uniondale, NY -- The Long Island Lizards of Major League Lacrosse (MLL) were able to retain the rights to attackman Chris Massey, midfielder Ryan Moran, and defenseman Pat McCabe in the league's first ever Expansion Draft on Tuesday afternoon. Three other Lizards players were selected in the draft by the new Western teams, which took place via conference call.
Massey is coming off of a career year, scoring 24 goals and 12 assists with a team-best 52.2% shot percentage (second in MLL). The Garden City native currently resides in Manhattan, where he works as an attorney.
Veteran defenseman Pat McCabe returns to Long Island for his sixth season, where he will join John Gagliardi and Nicky Polanco for the second straight season. McCabe, who is a native of Elmont, turns 37 in April. He currently resides in Oceanside with his wife and two daughters.
Moran returns to Long Island for his second season. Ryan, who works at Navy Prep as an Assistant Athletic Director, is one of the top all-around midfielders in the league. Moran is a native of Setauket.
Two 'Original Lizards', midfielder A.J. Haugen and attackman Tim Goettelmann, were acquired up by the new Denver franchise, in the second and fifth rounds, respectively. Nick Murtha, who has been the team's backup goaltender since he was drafted by Long Island in 2002, was selected in the sixth round by Chicago.
Haugen, a native of Bethpage, has started all 62 games of his career for Long Island, recording 106 goals and 44 assists in his five seasons with the Lizards.
Goettelmann, a native of Manhasset, is seventh on the league's all-time goal scoring leaders list. In his five seasons with the Lizards, he scored 131 goals and added 50 assists.
Murtha, a native of Manhasset, has seen action in 12 games in his career as a backup behind Greg Cattrano and Brian Dougherty. Murtha has a 2-2 record with an impressive 54.7 save percentage and 13.6 goals against average. Murtha will likely start in goal for the expansion Chicago franchise.
Midfielders Conor Denihan, Dan Paccione, Tom Zummo and defenseman Frank D'Agostino were also on Long Island's unprotected list will be placed in the league's player pool, and could be re-acquired by the Lizards in the MLL Supplemental Draft in December.
Major League Lacrosse, a ten-team professional outdoor lacrosse league, was founded in 1999 by fitness entrepreneur Jake Steinfeld, CEO of Body by Jake Global L.L.C., and founding partners Dave Morrow, a former champion lacrosse player and now CEO of Warrior Lacrosse, a leading global provider of innovative and high performance lacrosse equipment; and Timothy B. Robertson, former CEO of The Family Channel and the current chairman of Bay Shore Enterprises, L.L.C., an investment holding company with activities in international media and Internet technology ventures. The MLL commenced play in June of 2001. The MLL is comprised of two conferences. The Eastern Conference contains the original six teams, Baltimore, Boston, Long Island, (Montclair) New Jersey, Philadelphia and Rochester. The Western Conference debuts in the 2006 season with MLL expansion franchises Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles and San Francisco.
