Major League Lacrosse completes expansion draft

Published on November 1, 2005 under Major League Lacrosse (MLL) News Release

Boston, MA (November 1, 2005) - Major League Lacrosse (MLL), the premier professional outdoor lacrosse league, announced today that is has completed the 2006 Expansion Draft. The draft began at 1:00PM ET on November 1, 2005 and lasted for approximately three hours. Michael Watson was the number one overall selection. Watson, a former Boston Cannons attackman, was taken by Los Angeles. He did not play in 2005 but was a perennial All-Star for the Cannons from 2001-2004. The Cannons also lost midfielder Chris Rotelli in the first round. Rotelli was selected second overall by San Francisco. Denver took Rochester's John Grant Jr. with the third overall pick while Chicago selected Philadelphia's Doug Shanahan with the fourth pick.

By rule, after an "Original Six" team lost three players it was able to reclaim an additional player. This held true when the team lost a fourth and fifth player as well. The Baltimore Bayhawks were the first team to lose three players. Baltimore reclaimed Gavin Prout, Tom Marechek and Christian Cook. The Cannons were next and reclaimed Mike Regan, Peter Inge and Tim Byrnes. Boston was the only team to have all of its 10 unprotected players either drafted or reclaimed.

Seven members of the Cannons were drafted by expansion teams, the most of any "Original Six" teams, while six were taken from the MLL Champion Bayhawks. Attackman and midfielders made up seven of the first eight selections. Mike Levin was the first goaltender selected. He was taken 16th overall by Los Angeles. Four goalies were selected in all.

Teams were allowed to submit paper work for trades during the draft and those trades were released at 5:00PM ET. Please refer to a subsequent press release for the trade results.
